Took advantage of the one day this week that the TV weatherman said would be the best, with high pressure and no clouds. (I wonder if they say “30%” chance of thunderstorms when they have absolutely no idea what the weather is going to be...) We decided to give Utah Lake a break from our weekly assaults since she had become such a fickle mistress to so many and try something else until the channel cats complete their nurseries. Given some encouraging reports, I thought that maybe this was the year I take a few more lumps at Willard, which had rewarded my inexperience with unkindness the summer before last.

We got there early (for us) as the sun was bright as it lit up the higher ramp fees with cheer, along with the awaiting hordes of mosquitoes that we were obligated to feed. The water coming from the channel of the South Marina was like chocolate milk, but the main lake was glassy smooth and barely a breeze. "Niiiiiice…." I thought to myself as I checked off the box next to weather on my list of hopes for the day. It seemed that 4 – 5 other boaters had read reports suggesting the South dike. (Boy, I sure hope one of ‘em had a fire extinguisher in his boat, as we watched smoke billow out of the engine compartment. (Note to self, check fire extinguisher and be ready to help.)

We headed North to avoid the crowd. (I'm sure many a wiser fishermen would raise one eyebrow at my "logic" of where to fish...) The sonar pretty much showed nothing once we got our lines out… One deep diving Rap "tail dancer" in black and white, one lipless shad Rap in blue and a white, and fire tiger homemade lure completed the buffet, rigged up like I’d been taught. We snaked around at various depths for quite a while, but not an inquiry was to be made as we trolled all the way thru Freeway Bay and to the North Marina. (Note to self: Even the lipless lures will be destroyed on the bottom in water more shallow than 8’).

So…. we headed west to some spots that I marked on my GPS when I went out two years ago with a past BFT moderator who was showing me the ropes. Nothing... The water was colder than I expected when we started, not yet even 65, my son remembered it as being colder. But it had warmed several degrees as we neared the light pole. Still nothing… Does that mean I should go deeper, or shallower, or to another area? (Note to self: Find out what you are doing, cuz a recipe of from others t’ain’t workin’…) Rather than go home, I chucked out my list of “to dos” and just drove around out in deeper water watching the sonar to see if ANYTHING showed up as we headed to the GPS mark that I was guessing was the “island”. (Note to self: rename GPS markings in unit, and get more note paper to list everything that you don’t know about fishing Willard…)

Time to take a moment and just be grateful to get out on a beautiful day.

We saw some “wiper like markings” just after the 20’ deep water became shallower near the island. Finally, we chopped up the skunk in our propeller as opponents fought like a champs, but my son was the victor. He was rewarded with a sweet wiper that was a chunky 20”. Another pass and I got one, and it would have been awesome – if it was a white bass! [Wink] So, we counseled him to learn how to fight better sent him back to school. OK, so this was workin’. I picked up a foot-ish walleye that was one of the wipers school-mates. Obviously they were skipping class together. (We varied our trolling speed. Just short of 3 mph worked best, but one of the walleyes was caught going 4 mph or better as we were turning around!)

But the fishermen also had been held back a few years in their education, because obviously we didn’t know that fishing in the middle of the day was the worst time of day to fish. I pondered that as my son again brought in this wiper that was over 21.” WhooHOO! I don’t much care what anyone else might say, but this is a nice fish in MY book!
[inline 21Wiper.jpg]

It was my turn for a biggun,’ but was rewarded only with another small walleye, and then FINALLY – my pole bent like crazy, this HAD to be the big one my son was hoping I would catch. [inline bendo.jpg]

It wasn’t... I couldn’t believe a wiper of maybe 13” put up such resistance. But, we were totally pleased with our couple of keepers. It was getting later afternoon (water above 70 degrees) now and there was only one other boat we could see. Perhaps those other boats should have taken a hint from us newbies and stuck around.

FWIW: I'll show off my home-made rattle lure. [angelic] Gotta love it when they work!
[inline Wiperlure.jpg]

We felt totally satisfied with the day. We caught something on all lures, so that wasn't as important as just finding fish.

It provided the means to ask a few questions that I’ll open up to all. We had two planars with braided line. So how long of a leader do you guys like? And, so to you guys with pretty set formulas for trolling – what do YOU do if you aren’t catching?

Great report! The homemade lure looks great too. Wipers are that way allot of the time, Just rolling along you catch one and if your smart you just keep trolling around in the same spot and pick up a bunch more.
Bet your ready to get out there again!

Nice report Roger. That home-made lure looks great. You must be an artist or something.[Wink]

Yeah, a good trip can tend to make one an "addict" to get there again. [Wink] And I do hope to. Hopefully, I can be a little smarter though

Also, another question I'm wondering about are ways to get lures to different depths while trolling. Maybe it's a matter of using different lures designed to do that, or are there things that can be done to get the same lure at different depths? (I'm not quite ready for lead core lines. [Wink] I need more experience and the reels that could handle it.)

Adding more lead, Dipsy Divers, leaded line, and downriggers are all possibilities to get down deeper. Probably the easiest way at Willard Bay (because it is not a deep lake) is to use lures designed to dive deeper.

Never have seen one of those "dipsy divers" before. That's interesting. I wondered about a simple split shot. [Wink] In water that is as unclear as it is, a couple feet of difference could make difference.

The other main factor I wonder about, is how long to let out the line? One person may suggest specifically "X number" of feet, but that is with their line counter or reels, etc. I question if all are equal or exact. (All I have at this point is a clip on plastic counter from Shakespeare. So far, they are working to have some level of continuity.)

So, what is the effective difference if the line is out 50 feet, 150 feet, or 200 feet - with a lure that is designed to go down to a certain depth?

Hey - somebody who types even more than I do! [:p]
Totally kidding bud. I love your reports - you tell a good tail. No fancy photo(shop) finish this time, eh?

Knew a fellow programmer that had a VERY LARGE pencil - he said he always used for making "estimates" of how long a programming request would take. Maybe you need one of those with your BIG pad of paper for your notes. (hey - get two - me thinks I need one too!)

That's good that ya kept after them and got to a place where your patterns worked, or a pattern that worked in your place. I'll second/third the lure compliment. Is that glitter paint? Very sparkly, definitely tWinkly! Hell - I want to eat it!
Those Wipers are a frickin freight train aren't they? Feels like ya snagged a brick!

Depth control - various options. As you know - different lures are designed to run at different depths - pretty much the bigger the bill, the lower they go. But it's tied to speed, and distance too. You can simply add weight. I'd suggest the[url "http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Unpainted-Trolling-Sinkers/702211.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dtrolling%2Bweights%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=trolling+weights&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products"] inline keeled trolling weights. Less twistys.
There are also weight systems where the line goes through a plastic thingy, and you hook the weight below it - then you can easily change up weights if you're running different depths.

With planer boards - you can run some lead line - without going full hog. Use a length of lead after the board but before your lure. In-fisherman had an article on that. PM me if you want, I can try to dredge it up.
Then there's the jump to downriggers. Precise depth control for sure. Don't know how much a spooky Walleye is going to like a big lead ball passing by before they see a bait. Your sideplaners are probably a better choice in that regard.
Just I couple ideas I've read about and tried.

Great post - thanks for sharing. Hoping to get some time on that water real soon! Things are starting to heat up!
[cool][#0000ff]Nice goin' Roger. Doesn't look like Conner was very unhappy about the day either.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You guys deserve a good trip or two. Only problem is how do you downshift back to white bass?[/#0000ff]

[#000000]Thanks for the suggestions! It never ceases to amaze me just how many options [/#000000][#000000]and variables [/#000000][#000000]there are for any given application!

Yeah, I tend to be verbose, for good or ill... (But I strive to be able to communicate well, and it's cool if I can make someone Smile.) "Arty types" do tend to think differently - it's part of the job description! A true genius of music with a lot of quirks once said to me "Love me, love my dog..." [:p]

Unfortunately, I tend to see the complex before the simple... and it may take me longer to sift thru to figure things out. But in the end it gives me a more thorough understanding, like others say "to be able to think things thru." And downriggers, and bottom bouncers, and worm harnesses, etc... maybe I need to see them in action, but they send my brain into overload when a simple lead weight or different lure would suffice![/#000000] [Wink]

It works for me to have a good base coat of white vinyl paint. Then, I found that it made for very unsatisfying results to try to paint any details with vinyl paint... so I then switch to my acrylic. The color and blending is applied with an airbrush and my regular art brushes for painting the details. Then on top of THAT is the same gold/white glitter that TD uses, suspended in clear gloss vinyl for the "sparkle." It's finished off with a clear coat of epoxy. Basically, it's just applying things in clear layers of glazes just like "the Old Masters." [Smile]

However, I confess that it takes time, and sometimes I just hate to lose 'em. So unless I wanna do something totally unique, the better deal is to just buy lures! [laugh]

And if I wanna eat my creations - I suggest switching to ANOTHER hobby of mine. Darn shame there aren't any tuna in Utah Lake! [laugh] Making my own sushi saves me a TON of $$![/#000000]

[#000000]I have do have some "photoshop specials" in mind, so please be patient CoyoteSpinner. That takes time also. I have to be thinking about the idea that isn't just repeating myself, the lighting and angles of the separate photos - and this trip I just wanted to focus on catching a fish![/#000000]
