Just got back from fishing the Kenai River for the first time ever, and got skunked big time. We fished (4 guys) with a drift boat guide and in 2 days of fishing 8-9 hours a day we only had 1 guy on our boat catch a Kenai King that went 20# The other 3 guys in the boat never even had a bite and only caught a few trout up to 4#. On day 3 only 2 of the guys went back out and got skunked for the day. Another drift boat that was in our party on day 1 had 4 guys on board and 1 guy caught and released a 50 incher that the guide estimated to be in the 55# range. At present on the Kenai River all fish caught between 45-55 inches must be released. For this same boat on day 2 one one of the 4 guys caught a 25# kenai king. So in 2 days of fishing the second boat caught 2 kings for 4 guys. All in all a very slow & disappointing trip for several of us. If anyone is thinking about going to the Kenai River to fish for a big king don't go in June as the fish numbers just are not there to justify spending that kind of money. According to the fish counters as of the middle of May only 6300 fish had made there way into the Kenai River. Which in my opinion for a river as large as the Kenai, is just a drop in the bucket. The only good part about the trip was we did have a good halibut fishing day out of the drift boats at Deep Creek.
