When I introduced myself on this forum a few years back, I told you all I'm like a big 4 year old and can never stop wondering "why?" even when something is working, sooooo.....
Why don't I hear much about people targeting crappies at Pineview during the summer? Years ago, spring crappie fishing was the whole reason I bought a float tube, and I see a lot of nice crappie caught through the ice. I know this year is "different", but I haven't seen but a couple posts on spring PV crappies in several years on this site...
Why can't we get together and sign a petition to at least bring a certain Mantua public servant and his practices to someone's attention. Boycott? I hate being under the thumb of a bully, no matter his vestige.
Why don't I even hear of people using swim baits around here? They seem all the rage in the mags and TV, and while I'm not gullible exactly, I see a strong trend.
Why isn't there some form of super portable TWO man craft that fits in my tiny Suzuki, and puts up/takes down easily. I fish a lot with my 10 Y/O, and almost never take my canoe, because it's a PITA. (pain in the butt), my kayaks are too small, the float tube is a one man deal, etc...I like the idea of inflatables, but I'm reluctant til I hear more about them....
Why can't I catch a fish in Flaming Gorge.... besides small bass? 5 Trips for pups and burbot, and a big goose egg...
Why do I know at least 20 people that say they like fishing, but they never go, and I end up going alone or with my kid? Last Tuesday I took my 64 year old Mom fishing...which was fun of course..... Are people's priorities really that screwed up?
Why do I have so many more ideas than tools when it comes to tackle I want to try to make.....?
Well??? [laugh]

The crappie took a pretty good hit when they lowered the lake so they could work on the dam. They seem to be on the rebound though there were a lot of small crappies caught this year through the ice... hopefully it will get back to normal soon. (there are still a lot of crappies and big ones too but it is so flooded they have a lot of places to hide - makes targeting them difficult)
Good luck with barney fife - he's there to stay, if he was going to be run off it would have happened a long time ago.
People do use swimbaits around here although they are not as popular as other options. Problem with swimbaits in my opinion is that when they are effective, so are many other methods.
As for fishing the Gorge, I can't help you with the slimers and salmon, the bass are just like bass everywhere else. As for the burbot, get a hold of me late fall and into ice season I'll show you how to catch them by the cooler full.

Signing a petition won't do you a lot of good against a cop/ranger. (I'm not familiar with the situation at Mantua, but I have 17 years experience in law enforcement) If the officer is acting in a rude/surly/pushy manner when he contacts you, I'm sure his supervision would probably like to know.
If nothing more than venting on a public fishing forum happens, then most likely nothing will change.
If you take the time to find out who/where his supervisor is and take the time to meet him/her and have a calm, civil discussion of your concerns, I'm sure he/she would listen. If several people are complaining about this officer's conduct, I can not imagine his department would not do something.
If your complaint is only that the officer enforced "nitpicky" laws in your dealings with him, don't expect too much relief. If it's the manner in which he treats you while making contact, then you have a case.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Why do you ask why???
Why do you want others to tell you how to fish and why to fish???
Why ask why?? Just try it..[

That was a great venting post I don't know about the ranger situation but you can look int the port-a-bouts the fold up to four inches thick also I float tube with my 7 year old quite a bit he has his own tube and waders and I tie us together with a 50 ft rope and just drag him along it works quite well and is to hard on the legs

Take a stab at this and say the North Fork Outdoors Outlaw Rampage. 10'6" U pontoon. Put an extra cloth seat on the back and two person pontoon.
Weighs 38 lb. and with no frame, the boat fits into a suitcase, let alone, set upis a breeze.
I have the same length framed model:

I second what Goddess just said! The Scadden's are great boats, fold up compact, lightweight, and top quality.
To catch fish at the Gorge: Rule number one, you can't catch 'em where they aint. Be sure your sonar is lit up before trying. Hold right over the top of them. Drop down. See the bite. Set the hook.
Don't worry about making tackle. Use what's out there, it works just fine. Worry about how to use said tackle.
Swim bait users don't tell the world how effective they are! Its an underground group. Some on here may think a swim bait is putting on your life jacket, swimming out to 20 feet of water, and casting your powerbait out.[

]
People who say they like fishing but never go are people you should avoid anyway.
Why ask why anyway? Just go with what works.

Thanks for the info. That's a great craft, Goddess..,,,, but that thing costs more than my car is worth. That's about my total fishing budget for 3 years... ...
I bought my dad a pontoon boat, maybe I could mod that....
Some of this is just venting.. Some are real questions, so thanks....

You mentioned you have a canoe?Try an Old Town canoe. Osprey, 16 feet 8 inches. Just over 40 pounds straps easily on top of Jeeps, Suzuki's, and Virtually every other SUV. 60 pound thrust electric motor. 2-3 Batteries will last you over a weekend of trolling. They are bulky but certainly not heavy. Fishes 2 as comfortably as any Tube.
Good vent on Barney. I would help you out, but a post up or 2 there was some good advice. Do the leg work and find his supervisor and level a complaint.
The crappie are not as numerous at PV so far this year. But the chocolate milk was the largest reason and the current color is still not very conducive to quality fishing.
Always a great forum to blow some steam.

I use swim baits quite a bit around here. Tigers, smallies and largemouth all seem to love them. Try some of the small swim baits like a crappie slider for those spring crappie. They really do catch just about everything.

Idk what your talking about but I caught huge numbers of jumbo crappies this yr!!! Yes there are alot of dinks, and yes there are gonna be some big numbers to come, but the biggins that are in there are REALLY BIG ... you saw my full limits of crappies that were all 13-16 inch!! This spring was tough, the Timing was off .. but the guys that were persist it really payed Payed off big!
And as for the swimbaits, I use them all the time!!!!! And they are killer for everything.

The first boat I ever owned was a coleman crawdad, it was 12' long and weighed around 80 lbs.. I carried it on top of my car and had a little 5 hp motor on it that I carried in my trunk. Worked great for fishing by yourself.

I second what jekern1015 said. Coleman crawdads are great little boats. I learned how to fish out of one. I am 31 now, and one has been in the family since I was 5 or 6. I now have one too. Got rid of my pontoon to get one. They are almost indestructable. My dad's has had two trees fall on his and it still floats just fine. I don't believe they make them anymore, but I have seen a few around on ksl here and there. I carry mine around in my truck and load it just fine by myself.
