Hit Pelican for a few hours yesterday morning. Bass fishing has still been pretty good, but the true hogs that are lurking in there have still eluded me. Anyone want to share their secrets ?? :-))
Spinner baits and pitching senco's into pockets in the dense reeds was what produced the best. There was some surface action going on out away from the reed beds. Looked like they were coming up after a small Dragon fly. I fly fished with a couple of big dry's and poppers but that didn't produce. Did get an idea for a grizzly pattern that might do it next time though.
If you plan to fish Pelican, bring your bug spray.. Mosquitos are pretty thick right now. Last two times I have been there, it has been quiet as far as number of fishermen, but then I don't go during the weekend.. Good luck!!

Try using a Spro Bronze Eye Frog, Snagproof Frog, or similar bait over the TOP of the lay down stuff. Need pretty heavy gear, flippin stick, good levelwind, 25-30 lb mono or 30-60 lb braid. Throw it out, work it back, and hang on. The big fish hang under the slop and that frog coming over the top is more than they can stand. They will come up through the slop, a blowup, to get it. You will miss 50% of your strikes, but it is just fun watching em come after it !!!
Thanks for the tip. Going to have to try that..

Thank you, NOT, to the moderators for deleting the two posts that mentioned the use of flies. So on this "General" board you can't even mention flies if you are fishing with them too?? Wow!! That's good to know I guess....
