I took a new kid to SFCR. I saw a 15-year-old boy at my Daughters wedding last weekend. He literally has grown up with my family but I haven't seen him in a while. Here he was stuck at a wedding and moping around. I go over and say a Jake, how would you like to go fishing in a pontoon?
You couldn’t wipe the off his face. His voice squeaked a bit when he said heck ya.
We left 6-30-11 to go fishing at SFCR. We got there late in the evening so we got camp ready and went night fishing from land for about an hour. We didn’t have much luck but we got to catch up on things. My wife and I watched this boy in our home day care from the time he was 6 months old. This boy is like family. He told me his parents are splitting up. I knew it already but was not going to say anything. After we got back to the truck we headed for bed.
We got up at 5:00 am. I told him yes there are two 5 o clocks. We hit the water about 6:00. It was cold for July but I didn’t want to drag a jacket along this time. Jake had never been on a pontoon. He was so excited he was shaking. He said it was the cold I told him don’t worry it will warm up a bit. He also told me he had never caught a walleye before. So that was the mission, to hook him up on a walleye. I hooked the boats together and we headed for the old honey hole. He was the first one to hook up. It was a trout, a small planter. Boy you should have seen him reel that fish in. It looked like a full body convulsion. He released the trout and went on walleye hunting. He hooked up with a couple of small bass and had many bites. A boater fished through us and caused some tense moments as his gear almost tangled in the pontoon Jake was in. I had some choice words for the guy but I contained my on water road rage.
I normally fish a lot different than I did today. I like to cover water, but I couldn’t leave him alone, I didn’t want to. I wanted to see his first walleye. I caught several perch, a couple of crappie and a few walleyes so I was happy. I was not on a “roll” but I was doing ok for the type of fishing I was doing, but I wanted Jake to get more. I was trying not to over coach him, but I also knew he needed to do a few things my way. Pretty soon I look over and he has a fish on. When it came up I was about 50 yards away. He was frantic; it looked like he was about to have a seizure. He went for the net, and I reeled both of my rods in FAST. I got there just as he was landing his very first walleye. Man he was excited even though his picture doesn’t look like it.
After a while we headed for the perch pit but no luck. They weren’t there today, only bass. Jakes luck just seemed to run out. I was catching fish still but no matter what he did nothing was biting. I finally said what do you say we call it a day? Ice cream at Rogerson is on me. We got to the store, iced the fish down, got some ice cream, and headed home.
I asked him how he liked his first day of fishing. He said it was great. I sent him home with a zip lock bag of walleyes for him and his dad to have tonight. It was a good day.
