My son, his GF and I fished Porcuipine this morning, trying to catch some kokes for the smoker. Well, we caught fish but they looked more like sardines[unimpressed]. We caught about a dozen and lost even more before we pulled the plug and left around noon. The lures we used were from Kokanee Creek tackle and we were catching the kokes around 20ft, trolling at 1.4 to 1.8 mph.

i assume they fixed the road going up there, heard it was washed out

I'm not sure, there is a sign that says "road close" but the road goes around that section. If it was closed, it wasn't for long because it has been like that all winter or least when I was up there ice fishing. They have been working on that pipe line up there for quite a while, so they need it open to do their work.

Yes the road is now open. Funny you hit it on the head when you said they look like sardines.........

Have you caught any larger than that? It is hard to image kokes that small spawning but the one in the pic above had eggs in it.

We have been up there in the fall and there some pretty small ones spawning. I Couldn't believe it. A little different then the spawners on the green river. Nice work on the " sardines " [Wink]sure would be fun either way!!

I have never caught any big cokes out of there but I have hooked a couple good browns. I would think ther has to be some bigger cokes.

Thanks for the report, the wife and I were going to head up there next Sat. but after seeing the size of them they haven't grown much since last winter. I doubt if I'll bother fishing for them. They went thru this years ago and the limits went to 24 apiece, after a couple years of that the numbers were reduced and the size picked up with the average 12 to 14 inches and some reaching 16 to 18 in.

Yea, I heard the same thing and thought I should check it out for myself, I was hoping they would have grown two or three inches since winter but I guess not. That fish in the pic above was actually one of the larger kokes, they ranged in size from 6" to almost 9". If I make another trip up there, I'm going to target the browns. We were marking a bunch of bigger fish but I was targeting kokes and did not spend too much time chasing them. The lake is full and going over the spillway. Hey Pete, do you remember how many years it has been since the kokes were this small?

I was still in the military so I think it was around the early 80's. I spent my last couple years in IL. at Chanute AFB and retired out of there summer of 86. I know when I got back to Utah that summer that I found out that Porcupine had opened to ice fishing and the limit of Kokanee was 24 apiece. I have seen weekends where I know there were maybe 150 to 200 people on the ice and limits of 24 were quite common. I think it helped. I was worried when they pretty much drained the lake back around the fall of 98 for repair on the dam and replaced some hardware and there was only a puddle in the middle I thought the Kokes were gone but with in a couple years we really started catching some of the nicest kokes I've ever taken out of there. I don't know if Causey has ever gone thru this with small kokanee or not as I don't fish that much. I wanted to make a run to Anderson Ranch this summer for the kokanee but the wife wanted to spend a few days at Starvation fishing for the walleye and perch this month so I guess I won't make that run
