Forgot to ask about my most favorite and most expensive fishing location, (gas $), and longest trip, smallie fishing hiking on the trail after the road ends and smallie fishing. Any guess as to when the river will be down enough for the Sparkinator and I to fish and any recent reports?

The river is approaching normal levels. Last year it was 3.01' on the Murphy gauge on July 1. At the moment (9:30 PM 7/2) it is 3.38, but it hit a low of 3.07 this morning. I fished the Snake yesterday and it was quite muddy, but the current was much lower and slower than a couple of days ago. I found the smallmouth to be scattered, probably due to the water dropping so rapidly. It was at 7' a week ago. I've caught catfish on every smallmouth trip this week.

what are you using for bait for the cats.. was down there and tried just about everything and couldnt get a hit..

I don't fish for the cats. They just seem to like the lures I'm using for smallmouth. The last one I landed was caught on a Chatterbait. I've caught them on tubes, spinnerbaits, plastic worms, grubs, etc. They just seem to eat everything. I don't think I'd use those lures if I was targeting catfish, however.

my brother and me caught 6 cats and a sturgeon down there on Friday night. All on worms and then one on a worm/bluegill combo. For me anyway, catfishing down there has always been really hit or miss. Do good once then get skunked twice... can't really go wrong with worms or crickets though

Just there a few days ago...water was awesome...still a little stained but pretty good...only managed a half dozen smallies on topwater in my favorite spots so im thinkin they are still spawning down there....
