So a while back, I bought Humminbird model Piranhamax 170 fisher finder for my pontoon. The guy at Cabelas recommended it. So far it shows depth and temp very well, but in my opinion, it's not showing fish that well.

For instance, today at Whitney Reservoir, I slayed the fish but saw limited fish on the finder from shallow to deep water. As many fish I caught, it seems I would of seen lots on the finder. I bet I saw less than 10 fish on the finder all day. Btw, the fish at Whitney hit various dark leech patterns on sinking line.

Does anyone have any opinions or suggestions regarding my fish finder?

Thanks,

Justin

If you have the fish symbols on turn them off. Have you tried increasing the sensitivity setting?

[#000000][size 3][font "Comic Sans MS"]Ditto on what Kent said. It's very important to get the sensitivity setting just right, and you might need to adjust it several times during the day. Too much sensitivity and you just see a lot of screen clutter, not enough and you miss a lot of what should be showing up on the screen, like FISH. As for the fish symbols, most people turn off the fish symbols and look for arches, assuming the boat or tube or fish are moving.

The cone on a transducer will only show what is directly under you. As you move through the water the fish that are close to you may move away just enough to be missed on the finder.
As the others have already said, adjust the sensitivity to help mark fish.
Play with it and you will get to where you will know how sensitive to use it.
Turn off the fish finder mode and just watch for arches to show up on the screen.

I hardly ever see fish under me when I'm on my toon, in water that is under 15'deep.
