I think boats in general scare fish away just with water displacement. I bank fish all the time, or dock fish I guess, but I notice activity die down most when a boat stirs up the water. Swimmers or anything else hitting the water where the fish are hanging out will do it too.

It is funny you put gas on your list. I have had a very positive experiance fishing Kokes at Mackay many years ago. I spilled a little gas in my worm container after fishing all day and only catching 1 fish. After the gas spill we caught over 20 in the next couple hours. I figured it must be something like WD-40, the smell brings them to the bait and then reaction takes over.

On the other hand, I think the boats and Jet ski's are the biggest disturbance. Fish seem to head for the bottom and hide until the boats are gone.

Tuff call, I don't figure fish to be real smart though.
I am betting they adapt to a lot of boat traffic.
From fishing rivers, I do know that silhouette or shadows will spook
Sound, I don't know about that either. I watched a program where a captain took clients out and would tap on the floor of the boat with a pool stick to attract fish, which it did, so I have tried it....hummmm...I will leave that one up for every ones own experiences.[Wink]
Colors? I wear pretty bright clothing with YELLOW being my favorite...no problem there.

I think stillwater is very forgiving, and you can do a lot more there. Gin clear rivers however, stay low and out of sight, still not sure on sound because of wind and what not.

I just say, don't read too much into a no fish day, it happens to everyone, that is why it is called fishing, not catching....LOL

nailed that one on the head. in moving water or in the shallows of lakes and resivoires shaddows and silloettes will do it every time.

i did see something cool on the sportsman channel the other night they were trolling for chinook in the columbia and when they were fighting a fish if it got under the boat the guy would bang on the bottom of the boat with a stick and the fish would spook and come out from under the boat every time.

you foregot scuba divers! there is a pound by me were every year scuba diver spoil the fun of fishing. just so they can see trout under water.

only time I see scared fish is when I spook them from above like floating over them or coming up on a hole in a stream and watching them dart off so that is all I know and would say a silohette from above spooks fish the most. I am sure they get used to boats when they are a constant thing but would spook again later on after they show back up again with the image/shadow of it being the main fear rather than the sound. They just aren't that bright no matter how much we want to think we outsmart them.

I said bright colors, I swear that my wife's bright pink tackle box scares everything on or in the river.

I disagree when your in the fishes environment they become very curious and often come close to check things out. I have had fish swim right up to me in dierkies blueheart, bluelake in nevada and redfish lake.

They may become curious, but I assume they are very alert. Little fish will swim near bigger fish that they know can eat them, they are just prepared to dart away if the big fish tries anything. So with divers are they curious but more likely avoid eating anything for a while after.

Next time, have a couple of worms that you can drop and see if the fish dart in and grab them.

What's wrong with pink!

Again, I wear red, yellow...PINK what ever and haven't noticed any difference, but generally, if I can see the fish, they can see me, and I think it is more about the movement/silhouette.

Salmon LOVE Pink don't they?[laugh][laugh]

I'm a swimmer... and they are not afraid of me! [Wink]

Took this yesterday: http://youtu.be/dxyv_r6fEN8?hd=1

In the poll, I think it is what the fish are acclimated to. Some lakes have lots of boat traffic and the fish are used to it. I think something related to scent is the most important element in whether they will bite or not. So gas/oil could keep them from biting. Too much noise (irregular) in the boat too may make them on edge and skittish too.
