Howdy all. Just wanted to share my latest adventure:
Spent just over two weeks on the beautiful garden isle with my beautiful wife and son and cool mother in law. My father in law was there for one of the weeks.
Kaua'i has the wettest spot on earth, receiving on average over 440" of rain per year.
I did a LOT of snorkeling. I absolutely love it. It's a world God never intended man to see, but thanks to technology I can strap some goggles on and visit a whole new world. I swam with turtles, and swam away from one that was bigger than me! Saw some cool eels. I had to buy a book on reef fish because I like to know what I'm looking at.
My wife and I celebrated our four year anniversary on the beach where we were married. Watched some dudes surf fishing off the twenty foot cliffs. Weird deal.
but this wouldn't be bft without talking about FISHING ....
second day there I chartered a boat with Captain Don. This is my third time on his boat. He's a cool dude with that laid back island mentality. But don't be late and don't hem and haw with the other guys fishing. Someone step up and take the rod!
we left the harbor and were immediately accompanied by a pair of dolphins. Freakin sweet! We trolled some squid patterns out to 6000 feet where a shelf marked with a buoy pushes the baitfish up. I lost a fish and the lure....but I'll come back to that [Smile]
Captain Don said we are going to change tactics because he was watching a seven year old in another boat school us. So he switched to baiting hooks with skip jack he caught the day before and throwing a couple pieces of chum out with the baited hook with an open bail. It only took ten seconds or so before each hook up. We boated quite a few five to eight pound yellowfin tuna and released a bunch of smaller ones. There were four other guys with me taking turns and we were all having a great time. I caught the fish i broke off earlier. Apparently Don uses a very specific hook and wraps red wire around the shank. We got it back! The last fish of the day was a 17 lb yellowfin caught by the kiwi on the boat. Took him about 25 minutes to bring it in. What a fight! The fish had a round bite taken from his side. Don said it was from a cookie cutter shark. Check it out on youtube. Weird and wild stuff! We saw a HUGE tiger shark on the surface on the way back to the harbor, and I saw flying fish for the first time.
my whole trip was a treat for the little boy in me : catching and watching fish, swimming with turtles, seeing monk seals (endangered), sharks, flying fish, geckos and anoles, frogs and toads, some golf ride alongs with my father in law, and taking my little boy to the beach for the first time. He's an adventure boy, too!
it's just too bad my first day back to work sucked SO incredibly bad that I had to quit my job. If anyone needs a hard working dude, let me know [Wink]

Nice report and pics Josh, thanks for sharing. I've been there twice and really enjoyed Kauai, I can't remember the canyon but it is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, did you make it up there? Where did you stay, we stayed at the Pono kai.

Waiemea (sp?) Canyon. That place is rad. Didn't go this time but spent two nights in a cabin up there last time. My sister-in-law lived in Kaua'i until about four months ago, so we used to slum the island for cheap. Now we're typical tourists. We stayed at the Marriot Courtyard in Kapa'a area for a week and spent the other week at the nice Marriot in Lihue (folk in laws have the time share there.....score! [Wink]
