So, I hit up the Mirror Lake area again today with my wife(poor man's A/C). It was beautiful up there, but a bit breezy. Today was much more exciting than last Saturday's trip. We hiked to a lake about a mile back, and fishing was pretty amazing. My wife and I caught over 30 brookies in a couple hours (at least a half dozen going over the foot long mark). The highlight for me was that I caught a 13" beautiful brook trout that had been tagged. I will be doing some research on Monday to see what I can find out about it (measured it, and released). All in all, a great way to spend a Saturday.

Thanks for the report and pictures. Finally, it's starting to look like summer up there! Looks like the lake you were fishing was free of ice as well. What did the snow look like up there? Looked like the lake you were fishing was free of ice, which is a good sign. I'll be up there next week for a couple days, and will make a report. Just out of curiosity, what is the elevation of the area you were in today?

I was at about 10,300 ft. I think. There was still spotty snow on the way, but very manageble. All lakes I came across on my adventures this weekend were ice free, for what that is worth. We hiked up past this lake towards another that went on the north slope of a mountain and it was another story. There was still 4' drifts and about 90% snow. Everyting is so wet up there too, so I would make sure to have the water proof boots... just my 2 cents.

Which picture is the 13"? There is a lake up there that 15" Brookies are not uncommon, and not as remote as some might think.

Actually I did get confirmation from a biologist that the tag was done for this fish in a study between regular brook trout and tripoloid (sp?) brook trout (sterile) to see the differences in growth, life, etc. The results apparently were that there was not a significant difference. So, hopefully they can figure out a solution to the overpopulation/stunting of brookies by being able to control population easier, I just don;t know how much more expense there would be in the many more that would need to be stocked.

Myfamily is heading up in about 2 weeks. You post has made me extra hungry to get up there. Of all places I like to fish, the Uintas are right up at the top. You can't beat it. Whether you are up with your whole family or backpacking with your wife or buddy, the peace and beauty are like no other. Brookies are by far my favorite trout to catch. Have you ever tried the Wind Rivers? I used to feel like you do about the Uintas, well I still do, but I think you would love the wind rivers as well there are some incredible vistas not to mention great fishing. If want ideas where to try up there send me a PM.

I agree with you, the Boulder and Uinta Mountains are nice. However the Wind Rivers are a world class experience. A totally different category. Nice thing is for about the same drive time as to the grazing and atv degraded Boulders from SLC we can be in the Wind Rivers. Just don't tell anyone from Wyoming that you're from Utah[
