I'm working near Huntington, Castledale area and we went shooting after work the other day. I was sighting in my BAR 300 win. mag (damn sexy!) and then we went for a drive. Prairie dogs everywhere! It was like shooting bottles of ketchup with that 300 lmao! Lots of fun but cumbersome and awkward jumping out of the truck with it. So, I'm thinking a 223 with a decent scope would do it but I've never owned a 223 and was wondering what you guys would suggest. My buddy has dies for 223 and already does my 380,357,45,300, and 06 for me so I that part is decided, now I'm just trying to figure out a make and model....

Can't go wrong with a Remington 700. Stock triggers are easily adjusted and aftermarket triggers are easy to find and install.

223 is good. I like ruger also in a m77.
See what you can find at the local pawn shop. Don't need anything. Fancy.

Don't own one, but I've heard lots of good stuff about the Savage rifles with the accutrigger.

John, I bought a mini 14 ruger and it is blast to shoot. and it is pretty inexpensive to shoot unless you fill the forty round clips. It is kind of hard to stop pulling the trigger.

Cant go wrong with today's quality AR's. I have several which shoot sub minute with match ammo.

What about a .223 (AR-15), they are AWESOME, but expensive. I shot one and I got the fever for one, but couldn't pony up the money so I bought a .17 HMR that I have been VERY happy with. It's a rimfire like a .22 but the size of the the .177 pellets with a shell as big as a .22 long rifle magnum. They only come in bolt/lever action but they shoot flat, fast and accurate and relatively inexpensive. The bullet travels so fast it still turns things inside out, but probably not as bad as your bar.
I got the .223 & love it but still really enjoy the .17, I take them both if I'm varmit hunting.

Most rifles now days have pretty decent accuracy right out the box. . I chose a CZ 527 Varmint for my .223. It's a great gun with good looks. Has a set trigger for a light trigger pull with no take-up. I really like having a bolt action with a detachable clip. The thing i like best about it is that it will shoot almost anything. I have a hard time coming up with a load that it won't shoot under 1". For prairie dogs the barnes varmint grenades shoot awesome out of it and "ketchup bottle" them pretty well!

I have a 223 in a Rem 700 with a 3X9 Burris scope on it.
I don't hunt varmits so the rifle has only had about 200 rds. through it.
Here in Wyo. you have to have a 24 cal. or larger to hunt with so I'm wanting to sell the gun or trade it for a 243, 6mm, 257 or 25-06.
I also have about 400 rnds. of brass (200 loaded), RCBS dies, shell holder 3 boxes of Hornady 50 grain SX bullets and lots of CCI primers.
Good shooter and in excellent shape (2 years old.
