Full Version: Streamer Leaders

I have read that Kelly Galloup likes to use Maxima Chameleon 20# and Ultragreen 12# tied together for his streamer leader. I have read opinions that Chameleon can be visible and scare fish. Does anyone have a favorite brand (color) or leader material used for streamer fishing? Or should I just stay with clear mono?

Thanks--

I'm a clear guy myself. Use climax floro most of the time, but for streamers I kind of like mono better. Kind of works like shock tippet.
At least, that's what I tell myself....

For me it depends on the conditions of where I am fishing.

Clear floro or mono is my choice. I'm no Kelly Galloup though!!!

I think the areas he mostly fishes are fast/big water areas with big fish. I fish a lot of small rivers and streams, so I need a lighter tippet that doesn't spook the fish. Also the fish are smaller....much smaller!

P-Line Fluorocarbon all the way.

Fish Tech has a new line I really like. It's by Seagar and it's 100% Floro.

I tried that too for awhile, but just have less break offs with P-Line.
Not new though, been around for several years.

That's funny because I have fewer break offs with Seagar. I also think the knots are stronger/better.

Great, it is better than Vanish. I used it for a couple of years. I guess Henry's was my determining factor.
Just a little heads up Troller. I frequent another forum that others have changed as well from Seaguar to P-Line, but confidence is the name of the game. If this works for you, then by all means stick to it..
Maybe it is the fact I don't go heavier than 6lb.[cool]

Um, with that much confidence from you I will have to try it again.

Oh and Sportsmans sells both Seaguar and P-Line. Just be sure you get the 100% fluorocarbon in the black and blue box. Plus $5 cheaper.

I use a tungsten leader and only about 12-18" of 12 or 15 pound test fluorocarbon. Even on the Green catch fish with that set up. I think people make to much fuss about line. Heck I use braided line on my spinning rods and fish spring creeks with no leader and catch just as many fish as mono.

Other than the furled leaders I get from FG I usually make my own heres a great leader calc and guide

I also make my streamer and nymph leaders.
4' of 20# mono tied to 3' of 15# mono tied to
2' of 10# mono.
Cheap and they work great.
Another trick that I use is to tie a small swivel to the end of the tapered leader and attach my tippet to it. Saves my tapered leader from getting short from adding tippet plus it doubles as a sinker for weight.

I'm cheap so I used a thrashed dry fly tapered. Clip it back to about 1/0'ish diameter then add some 2 or 3x (Rio Powerflex). Total length is maybe 5 ft.

CHEAP! You??? Say it ain't so. Plus didn't I make you a bunch of Furled?

Seaguar AbrazX Flouorocarbon is where it's at. Super thin (8lb is only .235mm), super strong, and invisible. It handles as smoothly as mono too. I have tried many, and this takes the cake.

Try Rio's new Extreme Tippet.

20yd/18.3m 5x 10lb 4.5kg .006in .152mm

As a drawback it isn't cheap.
