I haven't fished since I was a kid and being in college it'd be cool to have a nice relaxing hobby to do while not in class/work.

I live in Tampa, FL so i have plenty of places to fish around me. but I am mainly interested in freshwater fishing with my kayak and such. Don't really know what type of fish I'd be fishing for I'd assume cat fish and bass and whatever else Florida is known for.

What type of rod/reel combo would you suggest for me for freshwater? preferably on the cheaper side under 100 would be good. And what type of tackle should I start out using?

shakespere fury is a nice combo and comes with a starter box.

enough cash left over to pick up a couple rooster tails a jitter bug, and a silver rappala and a hand full of soft plastic worms.

that should handle any panfish or bass you run across,

you might want some steel leader if you think you might run in to any paco fish.

not qite bigenough for big alligator pike, but you never know, if you play them right it may do the trick

The few times I did fish Florida the locals were big on live bait. Shrimp for salt and brakish water and shiners for bass in fresh. As allways talk to the local bait shops that will talk to a newbie, [ the one I went to didn't like yankees] and find out whats biting on what. There is some awesome fishing down there.

That's good advice, talk to the locals. You may find the local tackle shops to favor saltwater fishing, but it's all good. Peacock bass anyone? [cool]
