I had time today to do some bluelining and followed some leads to new streams that I had never fished before. I'm glad I did.[cool]

The fish today were much bigger than the Birch Creek dinks that I have been messing around with this summer. Most of the cutts were between 8-10," but early in the day I turned a fish that made my heart jump. From then on I knew that there was the possibility of big fish. I had several fish today run underneath the undercut banks and wrap me around roots.

Now for the big ones that got away story. My son caught a 16" Cutt and was trying to pose for a picture. I hit the camera button just as the fish flopped into the water. Is all I got was his hands in the mud.

The very next cast I got an 18" brown to inhale a stimulator. I asked my son if he knew how to run the camera. "O'ya I got it," he said. Before releasing the king of the small stream I doubled checked by asking my son if he got good pictures. He replyed, "at least twenty."

You know the rest of the story. As soon as I released him I checked my camera and my son had been hitting the button without giving the camera time to focus or go off. So no pictures.[frown][frown]

O'well those fish will live on in my memory for ever. It truly was the best smallstream fishing I have ever had for size and numbers. The weather was perfect and my son got to fish with his new rod he got for his birthday and my other son who is only 7 caught 7 fish on dry flies all by himself.

If you haven't fished a small stream this year. I would highly recommend it for pure fishing enjoyment.

Awesome post. Love to see those boys out there up to their knees in fun. Such concentration on the little guy's face! Great fish for a stream that size too. What is that fly it looks like all rubber band legs. It sure seems to work!

I think my favorite picture has to be the empty hands. That is so typical of about 90% of the pictures I take. Invisible fish!! [laugh][laugh]

Is it still a little high from runoff where you were at? Do you mind if I ask the approximate elevation of the upper part of the stream? Thanks!

Great report and pictures. Your small streams would likely be called rivers in Utah.

I will have to check the elevation I'm just not sure. I'm thinking 7,500' ?

I guess high water is relative. It was easily wadeable, but I am sure in years past you could walk in the empty streambed alongside a trickle. I really didn't feel like it was high at all. The water was not crystal clear as there were still small feeder streams trickling in some sediment.

The fly is a parachute royal wolf. There is a piece of weed or grass stuck to the fly and line that makes it look strange. I fished most of the day with a size 12 stimulator and caddis flies. Then I ran out of stimulators and caddis so I went to other stuff. It all worked as long as the float was drag free.

Thanks! I am trying to get more of an idea on what areas or what elevations are about done with runoff. I am looking to go a bit further out to some higher mt ranges and I don't really want to drive for several hours only to find it all still blown out. Actually I think most areas are starting to shape up.

I could see the water was still a little colored up, but that just makes the fishing easier.

LOL on the fly. The weeds looked like some kind of crazy legs!

Had a similar experience a week ago just haven't been on to report. Went to fish a creek over by the wyo/ID border that is chucked full of cuts but most are relatively small in size. Stream was high and a little off color first hole and bam 18in cutty on my 2 wt. Next cast 16 in cutty. rest of the afternoon was fish from 6in up to 18 all on drys. Seems that in many streams the cuttys are still up from spawning.

Good report & pics. This definitely is an interesting year. I wonder how much of a chance some of those higher elevation creeks will get to lower and slow down. Might be a briefer than usual year for good stream fishing if we start getting snow in Sep/Oct.

what makes this report so bad ass is not the fact your boy is fishing with you, which in itself is badass, but the fact your rocking the best baseball team ever(s) hat, HELLZ YEA DA' CUBS!!!!
