At 8am my twin and I met with 2 other guys (Marine Spear & [#212126][/#212126]JLG78). My twin was out a toon so then it was just 3 of us headed to Pineview. Well for JLG78 Cemetery's Fee was a deal breaker (he went to Spring Creek and got skunked) so it was just me and my MarineSpear looking for SMB's. Luckily my twin returned to PV later on (see other report).

Pineview- Got on the water by 8:45am. We fished the south side of the point and had zero bites. Then we got to the North Side and I finally had a good battle around 1pm! I casted out the senko and waited for it to sink to the bottom. Then as I was "fluttering it" I felt a snag (tons of those out there). Well I whipped the pole up and down and suddenly I felt it break loose. Then my line shot way off to the left of my toon and straight at me passing behind me on the left. Then as the slack tightened out it shot right back at me and under the toon going right. As the line went under the toon my rod bent under my toon into the water like I have never seen it do before. I forgot to open the bail and SNAP, it broke off the knot. Lesson learned. I have caught a 16.5 inch LMB before and this fight was way harder. Too bad I will never know what took it.

Then I caught a small SMB in front of my MarineSpear so he switched back to the senko wacky rig. Well the wind kicked up and we hit the shore to fish that spot. Then it happened, MarineSpear got his 1st bass ever. Murrphy's law kicked in and I had to leave by 1:30pm just as the action got started.

I got a phone call on my way to a volunteer event (which we never found) that MarineSpear went back to that spot and was doing well. I cannot wait to hear how the rest of his day turned out (come on now make a report dude!). I saw the skeleton of a dead TM on shore, how appropriate being cemetery point and all.

Besides the "Senko's rigged wacky" I threw a blue fox gold spinner in size #3 and even a separate bass rig (single tail in cinnamon black flecks) without a single bite. My partner even threw his entire tackle box at them and it was the senko advice that got him his fish. We did get nibbles from minnows (never seen them at PV before) and my nibbles were on the leader of my braid and mono, not the spinner itself. Sabotage indeed.

For some reason I loose my biggest fish of the day with this guy but he makes an awesome fishing buddy. I am totally willing to share the senko set up that I have used the past 2 times with members that are interested, just shoot me a PM.

MarineSpear with his 1st ever bass! He got a few bigger one's later on but I wasn't around to take a pic of it. I think I have him hooked on catching with me now!

Ya I'm addicted to catching now, been fishing for so long it's a nice change. After you left I caught three more, got to shore, packed up all in the time it took to call you. 3 SMBs in 1.5 hours is better than my average 0 SMBs in 19 years ... Thanks bro

Oh it kills me that you got more when I left. Murphy's freaking law! Fishing is always the best ust before you have to leave! We didn't even find that stupid volunteer event. Shoulda gone with our saying/mantra...................

"fish 1st and worry later!"

Been PM'ing around about the break off, coulda been my chance at a damn Tiger Muskie! Now my twin gets to hold that over my head until I hit Newton with CvFisher!

Thinking of getting out again soon. Grantsville on Saturday afternoon (after the MS volunteer event) and Mantua Sunday. Let me know if you are up for it. Let's get you your 1st LMB on Sunday!

Going to the fish shops soon for that Panther Martin and a few Blue Fox Gold spinners in size #2 for mantua and now #3 for Muskies.

Glad to see the $11 fee to get in there paid off for the both of us.

Curious why you have your drag set so tight that you have to open your bail? I thought that was why they put drags on reels.

[sly] these reports .... maybe a crash course on drag systems would be a good thread to start. [cool] any volunteers..

It is a new reel. Sometimes I forget which way turns it loose and which way tightens it. Still trying to dial it in. I had no problems pulling it in at 1st so I figured I had a good drag setting. When it got close to my toon I started to try and get my big net loose thinking it was right under my feet.

We were fishing in more than 30 feet of water so this thing was way more than 5 feet below me. My net is maybe 3 feet long. Whoops! I should have let the bail out, re-adjusted the toon and continued the battle. Re-setting the drag would have been a good idea too.

I have had a 16.5 inch LMB under my feet in my toon and I was able to keep him right under me so I could net him and my rod didn't bend like that! This thing took part of my rod under the water and bent it in half over my left toon. Glad the line didn't cut into my toon, after all my 10 pound mono cuts into my hands all the time.

When I bass fish I keep that drag tight. I never have had a bass break me off before. Starting to think this wasn't a bass after all!

Keep that drag set and you'll never have to open your bail. That was probably a TM, but you could land one of them on 6 lb. test if you know what you're doing.

Sounds like you had fun out there.

Not sure what kind of reel you have, but most all open face reels I've seen - if you look down at it from the tip of your rod - it's the 'ol righty tighty, lefty loosie.
Some closed face reels have a spin-dial, typically a +/- printed, but standard would be looking at it when holding the rod normally - right is tight, left is loose (again).

If you bass were the size of MarineSpears - tight drag'd be no problem.
I had the same thing happen my first Musky hookup - panfishing with my little kiddie pole, and musky snagged either my plastic worm, or the gulp minnow (I'll never know which) from my double dropshot rig.

Sucker took off UNDER my boat - as I watched the rod bend, bend, bend - then snapped the line. Next trip out - I was ready - drag set loose. He bulldogged to the bottom, and wedged in. Someone on the site had suggested to let loose and wait them out. Worked - he moved out, worked him in.
But when they see your boat, net, you - be ready for another run.
NOTE: I don't endorse or suggest fishing for TM with light tackle - I've had a big rod rigged heavy. But my two encounters came when I was pan-fishing for perch/crappie. There's been a couple great posts on proper Musky gear/handling that a worth a read.

If you're worried about 10lb line cutting your tube, you'd better watch out for the TM teeth. Heck - if it was a bluegill that punctured your twins tube - better bring some extra duct tape!
*Update My apprentice claims the 14.5 inch SMB he gutted had 3 crawdad claws in it and another small SMB! He used a different colored senko to get that one.

I loved the pics name cyote spinner "a little rod that could". LOL!

Next time I am landing that TM!
