I am trying to figure out how to set up my pole correctly, I just fish from the banks with my kids, and have very little experience. I just but a hook on the bottom on the line and 1-2 weights about 6-8 inches up from there...does thst sound correct or am I doing it all wrong?
Thanks so much in advance

I like a minimum of 24 and up to 36" of distance between the weight and the hook. I prefer to tie on a swivel and then have the weight on a separate line that is 8" long attached to the swivel and then the hook on a separate line attached at the swivel on a line that is 36" long. This will get your bait away from the mud and moss whether you are fishing rivers or lakes.

MMDon described what I do for the most part.

I use barrel sinkers because it allows the line to slide freely when the fish bites that way they hold on a little longer.

So I go...
1. sliding barrel sinker on the line first. The size depends on how far you want to cast and if your in a river you have to decide whether you want the weight to tap bottom or hold bottom.

2. I put on a good swivel. For most kid fishing situations I would go with a small one.

3. Tie on 24-36" of line to the other side of the swivel.

4. Tie on the hook of your choice. I use really small ones for stocker trout at family fishing waters. Usually size 10.

When you put your bait on make sure to have something that floats. That way the weight will hold bottom and the hook will float up above the weeds and moss. I usually put on a small piece of worm with garlic sented marshmellows. Others use power bait for the same purpose.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. I have five small children so I get a lot of practice rigging them up for fishing.
