Steelfisher invited me to float the Southfork along with himself and a friend from his job.

The morning started off peacefully with a cutthroat being caught on the second cast of our float. I hadn't even gotten my line in the water yet.

I tried everything from streamers to hoppers to nymphs to rapallas. I only caught one small fish all day, but that didn't matter because it was a beautiful day and a beautiful float.

We passed Prontotp early in the morning and it looked like he was doing pretty well nymphing.

Then Steelfisher got a hot hand stripping streamers with Kelly Gallup's "Zoo Cougar." First he caught this one.

Then this nice brown slashed at his zoocougar.

Then this sucker got caught right near the lips.

Steelfisher felt bad, but his friend took it well and kept fishing and catching for the rest of the float.

I told steelfisher that as much as we fish it is bound to happen at some point. It is also a good reminder why we always wear glasses when flyfishing.

Thanks Steelfisher for another great float in your drift boat. This will be a story that I will put in my list of legendary trips, for sure.

Been there and done that only it was a treble hook from a rapala sunk to the bends in my palm. Rough deal for sure..... Great day to be on the river though eh.

Cool trout but the sucker on the fly looks like someone should throw it back[sly]
Man I bet that hurt. Did they have to cut the barb off on the inside to get it out? Ron

It could have been the BUTT MONKEY or the SEX DUNGEON...LOL

Is that a modified Zoo? Looks like calf hair for the wing.

That fly is a zoo cougar that I forgot to tie in the mallard flank before spinning the deer hair. So it was a reject that I put on after running out of the good ones.
Nick said the fly came out without any pain. The Dr. just put some line through the bend of the hook and pushed down on the hook and popped it out.

hey found the site very impressed i look good with a fly in my mouth. the Doc used the technique you suggested in the boat and i should have done it it would have been much easier than fishing with it in my mouth all day. but the look on the nurses faces was priceless had the whole community care laughing hysterically.

Rule #1 in my boat is smash down the barbs. If you don't and hook someone the hooker pays $100 to the person they hooked. A couple people have paid. One guy hooked my dog in the eye ball, thank god he smashed down the barb. If you hook me with a barbed hook, i'll throw your a$$ overboard.

I am actually glad it did happen I might not have checked out the site and I would still be missing out. This is a great site I have enjoyed reading and seeing other stories from around the area.

It sucked.that it happened but I have lost more blood on streams when I forgot my mosquito spray and it really didn't hurt that much.

When I was a kid I tried fly fishing, from shore, left handed because my right arm was in a cast, and managed to hook myself in the ear with a little dry fly. Walked up to camp to get dad to pull it out and it was just barely in my ear enough to hold on, so nothing big.

Yours looks a bit more menacing, glad it was all good in the end.

should have walked around town with it might have started a new fashion statement . like rings in your lip ect. at least the fly was cool looking

Don't give the young people any ideas. I don't want a shortage of deer hair like there has been of hackles because of the hair fashion.

2 years ago i was floating the cottonwood to byington stretch on the south fork and was putting on a clinic with a chubby chernoble and a size 18 pmd tied on tandem and we stopped on an island to fish well it was summer time so i wasnt wearing waders and i found it strange as i was walking through some grass that something was trying to pull my fly rod out of my hand every time i took a step i looked down and saw the pmd buried in my shin past the barb. well my buddy and i pushed it the rest of the way through and out to try and bend the barb down but the hook was just to small to get to the barb so we had to cut all of the fly off the hook and cut the eye off the hook and pull it all the way through. like i said it didnt hurt when it first went in but i sure felt it while we worked on it. lol fun day.
