How/what do you think about fly fishing?
Do you wish you knew how?
Do you wish you were better at it?
Do you have no interest in learning it at all?
I am just curious. I learned it after quite a few years spin fishing because it was something I didn't know how to do. For a year or so I took both fly and spin rod with me. Now I never spin fish any more. Mostly because I never did as well with a spinning rod as I can now do with a fly rod. But maybe I just needed to be/get better with a spinning rod.
Oh well these are just the ramblings of a bored old man.

What is fly fishing?[

For me, fly fishing is just another method of fishing.
There was a time when I put away everything but my fly rods.
After a number of years of this, I realized that I was missing some great fishing by being so narrow minded.
I now fish with down riggers for Kokanee, jig for Lakers and love to take the grand kids to Mantua for pan fish.
There is more to life than just fly fishing, although it is still some of my best times on the water.

Use both fly rods and spinning rods. I find that I can usually catch fish with both. Never know when I will want to use one so i always take it out with me on the toon.

fly fishing, for sure has a spot in my heart. Thats how I learned to fish, sometimes I think about picking it back up. I could sure save alot of cash, and fish were its a little more quiet.
But then out of the blue I smell 2-cycle and hear the ponys, Damn I am ruined.
Maybe next year I can pick up that old 9' 6wt GLX and go throw some big ol streamers. Does still sound like fun.
The other cool thing I use to do was look at a map, pick a lil stream or creak and go check it out. you would be amazed at the little places where you can find some mighty fine lil trout that dont get much preasure, if any at all. [angelic]
I don't keep the fish anyway, and I am not looking to fill my bag every trip, which is not to say I don't do very well, and rarely walk away with a skunk.
I have used spinning, down riggers, and have a box somewhere with lures, Kastmasters, Rapala's, gummies.
I just figure anything I can catch with them are even more a challenge on the fly, and I like challenges. Be it stillwater or moving, total fly fishing, and I am good at it.....LOL[

]
Not gonna lie, like smoking, there are times I am temped to try it, but then I figure it out again and all is wonderful.
99% of the time, it is my own fly, and no scent or taste.
But, it is a personal choice. I think the better one is with what they choose, the easier it is, and more productive.

I forgot to add wippin up some bugs in the evenings. That is also a art I hope to pass on to my youngones. As for now I still poor all my own lead, tie up jigs and heck I even tinker in pouring my own plastics. catching fish on what you make is Still just as sweet.
I am older now and my hands shake from all the years of construction. So it is a little easier for me to tie up a 5/0 jig than a size 22 midge. lol
Been fly fishing for as long as I can remember. Did some trolling, jigging, spin casting etc. in years past and highly doubt if I'll do it again.
Fly fishing satisfies all my fishing needs. What else can I say.

Another one lost to the world of stick whipping, every time this happens an angel looses it's wings[cool].

When you graduate from hucking that lead pipe with silly string someday you too will be a stick wipper.

I only fly fish when targeting trout, anything else just seems wrong to me. I use flies for warm water species as well, but I do tend to use spinning rods more often for them. There are just some things you can't reproduce on a fly rod, just as there are things you can do on a fly rod that you can't do on traditional gear. They both have their place for me.

I prefer to get them on the fly rod, but I fly fish and jig equally. The two pole permit is the best thing invented for a float tuber!

The only lead pipe I have is for whacking trout on the the head[

] Fly fishing is fun sometimes if you like dressing up like indiana jones and cracking your whip. My favorite place to do it is on the Madison in the Lamar Valley, that's one place on this earth that I would take a flyrod and nothing else.

I corrected that as you see. Answering two people.....multi tasking, walking and chewing gum...etc....[laugh][laugh][laugh]
You sure tie some pretty mids. I landed a nice 18" smallie out of the snake on a mid.

I fish moving waters better with a fly rod but maybe I just suck with a spinning rod. When it comes to lakes and the ocean I prefer a spinning rod.
My next challenge is a Cuban reel.Any wimp can catch fish with a rod. Seriously if you've ever seen someone catch a shark or a 40 lb jack without a reel it looks like a real challenge and a blast.

In the past I made a few business trips to S. America. At one point I was introduced to handlining (with a coke bottle) for catfish. We were on the Rio Parana near Ituzaingo and caught catfish (suribe) to about 40 pounds. The bigger ones took everything - including a whole lot of flesh. My host took a look at myhands when I got back and decided I wasn't a very efficient drag. It was time to replace the brake pads after one trip!
So we went "jugging" for catfish the next trip - much easier on the hands - which had almost healed after 3 months. Bigger fish too.
