My wife and I are thinking about taking the grandson to Redfish lake this weekend for a night and to do a little fishing. I just havent stayed over there before and looking for a little help on which campground might give the best opportunity to the lake and offer the best shore fishing possibilities. Just taking the little trailer, tent trailer, for the short trip. Ya might get cold, but we're tough. Can anyone pony up some info on campgrounds, type of fish gear, etc that might work over there.

I don't like redfish lake at all. It has too many Forest Service Nazi's. If you go past the turn to Redfish about 1.3 miles there will be free camping. If you want to go a little farther. Set your odometer at the turn to the town of Stanley and head west. Go 10.17 miles or close to that and you will see a road that turns right. This will take you to Valley creek I think. We used to fish there a bunch when I was a little younger. My Wife's family always camped there. It is a great place to fish for trout. Granddad used to catch Salmon there. Heck you might even see some there. As you pull in there will be a camp sight to the right and down hill to the creek. It has a lot of firewood there, and Camping is free and the fishing used to be good. Ron

Redfish is pretty but the fishing is poor at best. Other options in the area are Alturas and Stanley Lakes. How old is the grandson? Are you looking for beach for a todler? Redfish does have nice beaches.
There is also open camping along the upper Salmon R in the Hell Roaring Lake trailhead area if my memory isn't playing tricks with me. Probably a bunch more in other places.

The river east of Stanley may be the better bet. Lower flows; safe and the planters hit spinners really well.
Camping at Redfish is great in the upper level campgrounds; the lower ones are lake lice heaven. (always that one loud camper drunk at 1 am) Alturas is awesome. We rode out the most incredible TSM there a few summers ago. Excellent lakeside campsites that aren't crowded once school has started. A BFT poster awhile back showed a nice bull caught at the creek inlet on roe. Fun catch and return action.
