Four of us hit the river below Grandview on Wednesday morning. We were on the water by eight o'clock. It was overcast with a little breeze in the morning, keeping it a little chilly. My buddies girlfriend caught a nice one, pushing 3 pounds, on a yellow roadrunner right after we started. The action didn't really pick up until around 1030 when it started getting warmer.

The fish seemed to be holding deep, so we all switched to drop shot rigs. This was the first time I have ever tried drop shoting on a river. Fishing in current, it took a half ounce drop shot weight to make a good presentation.
Once again we found a soft plastic leech to be very effective. Even caught a few yellow perch with them. We didn't catch a large number of fish, but most of the ones we did catch were in that 14 inch, two pound range.

Most of our fish were caught between 1030 and noon. We were successful using spinner baits and crank baits, but using a drop shot rig proved to be the most effective. Picture is of me with an average fish on this trip.

That is a nice fish, especially for an "average" of the day.

Where do you launch a boat below Grandview? I'm just curious because one of these days I hope to fish the Snake all the way to American Falls Reservoir and am compiling info on places to launch my boat.

14" river smallmouth are great fighters.

Phil I will be happy to help with this end. In fact I would like to go when you fish the area around cold springs to massacre rocks below American falls dam. Some say that that area could easily produce the new state record bass. of course you would have to teach me to catch one [fishon]
