Four of us hit the river below Grandview on Wednesday morning. We were on the water by eight o'clock. It was overcast with a little breeze in the morning, keeping it a little chilly. My buddies girlfriend caught a nice one, pushing 3 pounds, on a yellow roadrunner right after we started. The action didn't really pick up until around 1030 when it started getting warmer.
The fish seemed to be holding deep, so we all switched to drop shot rigs. This was the first time I have ever tried drop shoting on a river. Fishing in current, it took a half ounce drop shot weight to make a good presentation.
Once again we found a soft plastic leech to be very effective. Even caught a few yellow perch with them. We didn't catch a large number of fish, but most of the ones we did catch were in that 14 inch, two pound range.
Most of our fish were caught between 1030 and noon. We were successful using spinner baits and crank baits, but using a drop shot rig proved to be the most effective. Picture is of me with an average fish on this trip.
