Took my boy on his first camping trip. Little guy is getting pretty good, on our second day of fishing he was hard to keep up with, he kept getting a good fish nearly every third cast cutting down on my fishing time. Oh well. Bass were biting all over the lake and at all depths, green hues seemed to be the ticket. Our best drop shot fishin came on Aaron's Magic fished from 10-25 ft around rocks. In shallow water we switched to wacky wormed Senkos in watermelon with red flake. Sidenote if you haven't tried or invested in a wacky worm O-ring tool get one. Instead of a Senko lasting 1 fish/bite sometimes, we were catching 10 to 12 fish per senko. Noticed we had a lot of followers that would come out of deeper brush piles towards our senkos, so I set up a very lightly weighted texas-rigged Canyon Plastic's gitzit in a watermelon with blake and purple flake for a follow-up bait. I caught several larger 3 lbish bass on this, but you'll want at least 12lb test for this due to the bass holding in the brush due to the extremely clear water, bright sun light and being aware of our presence. Almost all of the fish I caught using this method shot right back into the brush after taking the gitzit, but everyone of them came out.
Later we had a little afternoon breeze so tossed around a white/chartruese blade and they nailed it too. For fun tied on a small Ayu Cultiva Ziggy and they smacked it but nothing over 2 lbs on topwater. The big bluegill are all suspended out in 20 plus feet, but there are lots of little 5-6" buzzing around in the shallows. Didn't get any monsters this time maybe a 4 1/2 lber for top fish, and the fish generally averaged around 2 lbs. Another buddy came up for fishin on Tuesday and after getting him set up with a Senko he caught about 30 in 6 hours. My boy tho ended somewhere in between 50-60 over the two days despite leaving early on tuesday. We took a lot of pics but since most of the fish were clones I'm just posting a few. Might have to wear gloves next trip despite not having pike type teeth I managed to remove most of the hide off of my thumb takin bass off the line, just a sign of a good trip tho.
On the 12th several of us hit Gunlock and figured out the big fish. Gunlock is primed to go off next year for sure. The average fish in there is around 1 lb and they are stocky gorging themselves on crawdads. The challenge in gunlock with any lure is to get by these aggressive fish. The lake is gettin no fishing pressure during the week. For the remainder of the fall the boat ramp is closed during the week out of fear of the dreaded quagga. We had the ake to ourselves the entire day. Only bummer is they moved Grandma Tobler's bakery into St. George out of Santa Clara so if you want a killer cinnamon roll better get it before you turn to going out to the lake, but the produce stand is still in Santa Clara and it had some great homeade salsa and chips for snacking.
Attached a few Sand Hollow pics. Still trying to get my boy to stop reeling the fish up to the tip of his rod, makes it hard to take the fish off in a float tube.
