How's it going? I fish Boise and the surrounding areas mostly, but am willing to travel for fish! I'm on a qwest to catch and take a piture with every species I possible can but I'm starting with my surrounding areas. I us a different site also and have been keeping track of my catches there, but there aren't more than a couple Idahoans on that site, so I was hoping to use that site for tracking and this site for info and share stories and such. I've read most posts going back a ways, but it sounds like most people are fishing Eastern Idaho and scattered around a bit.. Lately I've been hitting the high mountain lakes and streams and getting into flyfishing while searching for the elusive goldens and grayling, but while doing so, I've caught my first Brook and Brown and some really nice fish along the way. Hope to be able to share what I know with you and hope to learn some more myself! Thanks, Sean

What species are you missing pictures of? Maybe that info would help us, help you!

I posted on a new thread just after this, but here is a list of what I have. Marked in red are the fish I have and the rest are species I need. If there are any other catchable fish you know of in the state or nearby that should be on my list, or some that shouldn't be, please let me know! Thanks for the help!

Welcome aboard!!

Glad to see another southwestern angler on here. I mostly fish for Bass but now that I'm no longer fishing tournaments, I'm up for anything. Quite the list you've got going.

Thanks! I'm working on it! I've caught about 6 new species to me just this first year I'm trying to challenge myself. I've caught most these fish in the past but never got the photo. So now I do and I can check it off, but another main reason I was doing this is I like to explore Idaho and this is the best way to do it. I'm finding great hunting and fishing spots and getting to see places I wouldn't normally have traveled to> Also, everytime I leave the house, I try to hit a different pond or lake or section of river, until I really have my favorites, and from doing this, I have found some great holes! I've also found that I'm finding that I'm learing the rivers better in high and low water and learnin' the fish a bit better! Startin' to think like 'em!

Always willing to travel! I fished Henry's lake when I was younger but I was on the bank and it was super windy, But I saw you were talking about the spawning Brooks, and that would be a great catch! Any fish over there that I missed on my List? Even location specific species like the Bear Lake Cisco, Whitefish, and maybe Sculpin. I wasn't going to target those, because they are not a "catchable" fish are they? They seem to be a fluke, and I don't think I could identify them without a computer. Some fish are hard to I.D. so i try to take a few pics but i don't like killing them for a pic. I'd rather catch 'em again.

Another welcome to the board. I mostly looked at your catfish section. The black bullhead should not be an issue. You can get them there at strike or black canyon res.
On the flat head you list as using live bait. You don't need live bait, but I would have good old worms handy. Yes live bait like a live sunfish in summer is probably best from what I have read. But In the spring they are looking for anything and I have caught them on cut bait. I would not rule out crank baits. I have caught channel cats on cranks, spoons, jigs, and spinner jigs. I would think about farewell bend for flatheads.
The Blue cats will be the one that you will most likely get mixed up on. A lot of guys think a light colored channel cat is a blue. This fish is in my opinion a channel cat. I have been told by some that it is a blue. It lacks the right number of rays on the anal fin, and it is rounded enough to be a channel. This one threw me too at first due to the color but finally the spots gave him away.

Good luck on your fishing quest. I will add a couple of fish since you have tilapia on there. The western mosquitofish found in the Snake river near the area where the Boise river dumps in. and the Oscar fish in Barney Hot springs in the little lost river drainage.

idahoron, that is most definitely a channel cat--the deeply forked tail is your giveaway.

Most channels have spots or speckles (at least the ones I caught living in Texas did), but not all of them. Body color varies a great deal, but I wouldn't recommend eating one that wasn't silvery-white.

Blues tend to have stockier builds, similar to yellows (flatheads), and the ones I used to catch were quite a bit darker than the specimen you've got there.

I haven't catfished since moving to Idaho, but if channels behave here anything like they do back home, think of them as the Ferraris of the catfish garage--channels love to run and they can be quite acrobatic.

They are also the best-tasting cat, imo.

Thanks for all the help! I really appreciate it> I'll update the spreadsheet I've got and hopefully catch a few more fish before I find it too cold or slow to fish any more this year. With Hunting season coming up, I'm not sure how much time I'll have, but I'm putting down the first deer I see so I can get back to fishing!
