I worked out a family road trip this weekend and it just happened to be one of those trips that worked out perfectly according to plan.

We started by watching the elk bugle in Mammoth. Then we went to Gardiner Mt. were we found the local heard of bighorn sheep. I didn't take any pics of these because we do this every year and I have hundreds of pics on file.

We then went on a short hike to a lake I had never fished before. I was allotted two hours to fish since that is about as long as my wife could keep the kids occupied without going crazy. The fishing was very tough at first the first hour I had absolutely no takes. I finally found the fish in the very center of the small lake. I used a type two line but I probably could have used a three or four. After I found the fish I caught three Cutts in quick order. One of them was 21" and the other was 23." I felt totally satisfied and blessed at such great fish in the short time I had to find them.

After hiking out we made our way over Beartooth pass. If you have never done this senic drive you owe it to yourself to do it at least once in your lifetime. It is truly magnificent.

We had a great dinner in Redlodge and raided the awesome candy store that they have before retiring to our hotel.

Today we went home through Cody and the East entrance. We were treated to a visit from a Grizzly Mom and Cub.

We also did a bit of tourist watching as well. The most fascinating thing I saw was a tourist not more than 5 feet from a cow elk taking a picture with an ipad. I wish I would have stopped to take a picture of that.

Hope everyone's weekend was as fulfilling and enjoyable as mine was.

Great post. When Charles Kuralt called the Beartooth Highway the "most beautiful drive in America", he wasn't kidding. Everyone should experience that drive at least once in their life. I need to go back and revisit it. Mike

We returned from annual fall trip to Yellowstone, Tetons, and Thermopolis, WY yesterday. Rivers were full of fly throwers. I wasn't carrying gear; strictly sights, petroglyphs, and mineral baths on the agenda.
Your bear photos are awesome!
We saw no grizzlies but about everything else the area offers including wild mustangs, an upclose rattlesnake, plus a Golden Eagle. Backroads of Wyoming are especially amazing. Petrogylphs at Legend Rock were the highlight.

Gorgeous Yellowstone cutts--not a bad haul for two hours on the water!

I was mountain biking with a friend in that general area Saturday and saw a bear, as well. We caught the rail trail that runs from Ashton to West Yellowstone (we started near Mack's Inn).

We crossed paths with a juvenile black bear during the afternoon return trip. It was drinking/playing in a puddle in the middle of the dirt road, but scattered as soon as it saw us. Given the large amount of ATV/dirt bike traffic on the road, we were surprised.

Great family trip! Beautiful area, and it is amazing that you caught such nice fish in only two hours at a place that was totally new to you.

The bear population is very healthy. We saw one of the biggest black bear I have ever seen as well. I just didn't get my camera out in time to get a good pic.

Just awsome Windriver!!! My only concern was the tourist. We get so many from back in the Midwest and the East that don't seem to comprehend that those Park animals are very wild critters. I guess they think they are tame zoo animals. These are the people who get gored every year by the bison or snacked on by the grizzlies. What a shame. We are fortunate to have the wilds in our backyard here in the West.
