I will be heading to Newton tonight for some musky action. Anyone else have the itch to go?

Well, I ended up going out by myself and hit my good spots. Within 10 minutes had my first musky on. Fought him for about a minute when I reached for my net and lost him literally at my feet. He was approx 38". I then saw a rotted musky in the shallows by the shore and saw a fish move out from underneath it. I cast just in front of it and he hit hard. I could not believe his size. By far the biggest largie I have ever caught. I was using a J-13 rapala which measures approx 5 1/4" long. I guessed him to be over 15". I also had another musky follow my lure in to within 2 feet before he spooked. I am glad I went. Rain was consistent but light, nice mist on the lake, absolutely glassy and no wind all night

Nice fish did you check the dead Muskie for lures? Curious whether that kills them or whether it is some other cause. Thanks for the report. J

I always look for lures on the dead ones and brush. I found 3 tigers dead on the shore yesterday in a small walking area. This is becoming something I see every time now. Fisherman need to learn how to release them. These fish do not take more than a minute or maybe two to bring in with right tackle. They are big, but they come in easily. I understand if you have panfish light tackle on, but if you are targeting muskies, then one should get the fish in, maybe a quick picture and release them. One I saw on the banks yesterday had a gill hanging out of its side gill plate. That's just a bad release. You can cut your line if it is down that far. Its just Sad when I walk the shoreline at least once a week and see 3-5 new muskies lying there dead in a short walking distance. I fish different areas of the lake as well. I have seen people hold them up out of the water from their gill plate only without supporting their stomachs and have seen people try and pick them up for a picture only to have them drop 3-5 feet to the ground or boat because they either got scared or do not know how to hold them. These fish are actually pretty delicate and it does not take much to kill one.

I totally agree, nothing sickens me more than seeing dead muskies lying up on shore.

Newton seems to be a bit worse than pv with dead muskies on shore, my personal opinion, too many bank bait tanglers and to many muskies being hooked to deep and not revived and released corretly. I havent seen as many bait fisherman at pv as i do newton. Bait should be outlawed cuz i believe it causes a higher mortality rate on the ski's.

just my 2 cents

Sounds like you found some nice fish! Sorry you found/find so many 'has been Muskies'. Awful shame and a waste.
So were you shore fishing, or floating?

I can now say I've caught them on light tackle - hooked up when targeting perch, AND on my heavy rod with tougher line. Definitely better with the right gear - drag set well so they can run if they need to, but enough backbone to bring them in when ready. But they don't have to get over-exhausted running and running w/o ever being able to lock in the drag and hold them at the boat.

Now if they'd just stop snagging my little perch-spinners!
Personally - I'd hate to see Newton go bait-free. Those perch and bass like worms too much! They could probably do more to check folks for using whole perch, or pieces too big. Plus I just don't see it happening.

Saw they planted some new TM at Pineview. Pretty small to start. Wonder if they'll put any in Newton?
yote- when i said bait free i meant slabs o meat for the tigers, i have seen some suspicious 1 inch by 1 inch bait
