Sweet! I've never spent much time fishing for them, but I was hoping to learn a bit more about it to keep me busy this winter. Other than Ice fishing, is any other type of fishing decent in the winter? Any certain species or waters?

Try not to get too excited about the Boise steelhead fishing. Combat fishing is the moral of the story for that one and by combat I'm being literal, quite a few of the people that come out are quite rude. If you're truly interested in some good big game fishing you will want to try north central idaho. As far as locally, the CJ strike trout should be really starting to pack on the pounds here soon. I personally caught my share of 4-5 pound trout there last year in late November, early December. They look like footballs.

I personally have a ball fishing for those Boise planters. I've never run into anyone rude down there, but maybe I've just been lucky. I did watch a guy pitch a fit one year when, after he landed a fish he'd foul hooked, the nice gentleman who netted it for him demanded he throw the fish back. I thought things might get ugly until the man who netted the fish for him pulled out his fish&game badge and a ticket book. The guy turned the fish back pretty quick then.
The only thing is, it seems like they get fished out pretty quick. there's always a few hold overs to surprise an occaisional trout angler later, though.
It's kind of a good venue to learn basic steelhead techniques from I think (not that I would know- I'm a rookie myself) but you can watch guys trying out every method known to man in a hundred yard walk up the river, and see which methods seem to be working on different days. Kinda steelhead fishing training school.
Besides that- those fish are as real as the others caught at hells canyon- they just had a little car ride. They pull hard and taste great!
