Water Temperature: 65
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

This report is from this past Friday. Day after Thursday’s cold front. (Grin). I got a chance to ride with good friend pastor Doc Dumas from Athens. It’s always a pleasure fishing with Doc.

It was just one of those strange days. First thing was on the way to the lake we saw a guy on the side of the road holding up a sign that said “Will Work for Alabama Rig”. Now I have been hearing the hype over the rig but I thought that may be a little over the top. I had never used one, but low and behold, the next strange thing was when we got to the Water Front ramp we found one laying in the parking lot! Now normally I don’t pick things up, but no one was anywhere near the thing so I thought maybe I could sell it and buy a house or something. But I did at least want to try to catch a fish on it.

Well, we get out there, and I decide to tie on the rig. I still had some #100-lb braid from musky fishing up North, so I used that rod/reel set up. I didn’t want to lose it, all I could think about was throwing a bar of gold in the river.

We went to Mill Creek to get out of the wind. I heave the rig out over one of my favorite points and dang! Fish on! I caught 5!! All on one throw!!! 26.34 pounds!!!! Well, at that moment, Doc pointed at the sasquatch about 50 yards away on the bank of Big Snake Island. All I could think of was… do they swim? Anyway, the hairy joker was motioning for me to come over there. Well you know, I ain’t scared… so I hit the TM and headed toward the bank. Doc just kept fishing.

I get up pretty close and ol’ Squatchy starts pointing at my Alabama rig. He’s like trying to say something, like ungabunga and all, like “gimme that thing”. I’m like… huh uh! That critter ain’t getting my rig. So, just for fun (snicker) I stick it out toward him on the rod and twirl it around a few times just out of reach. I told Squatchy it’s just like cheese in front of a giant rat!... then I hit the TM on high to peel out of there! I mean, even if they swim, they can’t swim that fast! Doc just kept fishing.

Well I get about 10 yards and ol’ Squatchy is in the river headed my way. I’m still snickering, but that was until the breaker blew on the TM. That put a screeching halt to both the boat and my snickering. But I could hear ol’ Squatchy snickering… I was like panic city!

It took about 5 seconds for Squatchy to reach the boat, and the battle was on. Meanwhile, while T-Roy wrestles the sasquatch, Doc just keeept fishing. I yelled, “a Christian brother could use a little help now and then”! Doc said, “I’ll pray for ya”, then made another cast.

Well, it wasn’t much of a fight. Squatchy had me rolled up in a ball and stuffed in the rod locker quicker than Obama can say, “we need to create more jobs”. It hurt. Reeeely hurt!

Could have been worse I guess. Squatchy bit the rig off the end of my rod, along with about 11 inches of the rod, (which was my favorite musky rod, by the way) then left a giant mudshark on the front deck before he hopped back in the water and started swimming across the river.

That mudshark was super nasty. I’m just sayin. I don’t know what them things eat but… ewww. Don’t mess with Sasquatch is right.

All I could say was, you can’t have anything much weirder than that happen to you. Dang.

As I was finishing up cleaning up the deck, Doc just kept fishing. Then another boat came around the back side of the island. I hollered at the guy in the boat and said, “Did you see what just happened here”? He said, “Do whut”? I looked back at Doc and said, “how could that guy have missed all that”? Doc shrugged his shoulders and, kept fishing. I looked back at the guy in the boat and he was gone! Poof!! Vanished!!! You guessed it… ab-ducted by aliens… and I thought I heard someone say, “thank ya veramuch”… Well, that explains those crop circles I saw in the hydrilla mats. Doc said we’ll pray about it.

I called it and said we’re throwing in the towel, you know, hit the carwash on the way home. But Doc did catch that 7 pounder he’s holding up in the pic just before we left. (Ok, it’s 4-1/2 but you know, it was a weird day).

Seriously, (grin) we had a great afternoon. We caught everything on top-water baits. (Spook and Pop-R) Couldn’t get a crankbait bite going. And I don’t have enough collateral to get a Alabama rig. (Grin). Doc’s fish was the biggest (of course). I’m on Pickwick and Wilson next week, but hope to get back on the G if the weather will just be nice. (And if Squatchy is not around. Good luck and great fishing! And… well, like they say, don’t mess with Sasquatch.’)
