Welcome to BFT. What was the size range, largest etc of the brooks and cutthroat you caught? How thick was the ice?

Any pics?

Thanks for the report.

Just wanted to second the ice thickness report. I heard from a good source that it was 4" at the county boat dock.

That's where we were at and the ice was a good 4"

Thanks for the report mak daddy. We did pretty good up there sunday also. Slush was kinda bad where we were. Leave some of those big brookies in there for me. They sure are pretty right now. Anybody fished the hatchery yet?

Windriver,

I don't want to cast a negative report to all this but feel obliged especially for you and the other forum regulars. I was about 200 yards off the county boat dock Sunday - November 20, 2011. Most of the ice was 4.5" or better. It was a spooky situation though with what appeared to be good ice but then water above that and ~10" of snow above the water in most places. I went behind another guy that was methodical and repeatedly checking for depth but we stopped and fished once we hit 12' of water since we figured that was deep enough. Later I ventured only 30 yards further and found a thin spot. It was so thin that I didn't do a very thorough check but estimate between 1.0" and 2.5" thick ice. The important thing is that it was less than half of what it was 10 feet away from that spot. With the large insulating layer of snow, this situation is not going to improve much regardless of extremely cold temperatures and time. Hopefully the wind will either blow the snow off or ice it out so it can start over with better formation conditions. I have considerable experience on early ice and the situation at Henry's right now is not good IMHO. I would think twice about taking the kids out on it and recommend that you take a full compliment of early ice safety gear (picks for life, using the sled as a boat etc.).

I was thinking of coming up Friday but I am concerned now about the depth of the snow and how far I would need to pull my sled. Is there access where the pull wouldn't be as far?

Pintail point or county boat dock are the shortest pulls to fish. Good luck let me know if you are coming.

Thanks for the report. Conditions can change fast. I always am prepared with safety equipment on early ice.

Yes for sure, it would be nice to meet and even fish together, still a little concerned about the snow. Hate to drive all that ways and just have to turn around and go home.

Anyone willing to take a guy that's scared of the ice ice fishing? Just have to stay close enough to the truck that I can tie a rope to my waist and the truck. lol

I suppose you could just get some good suspenders and attach them to a lightweight float tube. That way you would only be partially dunked. [Wink] Not sure you'll be able to take a long enough rope for Henry's.

I have though of that. Taking my Renegade as a sled and a seat...JUST in case...LOL
I am use to seeing ice float by, even drinks with Ice in them, but to walk on it??????

An auto-inflate PFD should always be worn on the ice. Harder to drown if you don't go under! [Image: bobwink.gif]
