Well, i hope I dont break any rules of the forums to post a link to a product but this is the absolute must have item for all you ice fisherman and women.

Sorry, but my Idea of fishing doesn't have a mechanical contraption setting the hook. Where is the skill, the battle to out whit your opponent. Enjoy your toy, I'll set my own pole.

Well, your idea of ice fishing isnt everyones idea of ice fishing. I just post this to promote a local guys product. If you like catching fish and ice fishing this is a great thing to have in your bucket and over your hole. Some people like to have new toys to up the catch in cold weather and soft bites. It doesnt reel the fish in for you and it most certainly doesnt find the fish, just sets the hook. you still have to drill your hole (hope you dont have a gas motor thats cheating) and know what depth the fish are at, what they will eat, and hold your mouth right.

They work great. You cannot go wrong with them and you will absolutly love the device when you have it set on a hole. Grab one or 5 if you love ice fishing gadgets, like jig machines, rod holders and the works.

I've definitely been looking at them for both my kids and for those searching holes drilled just a bit farther away... I'm glad to hear of people's experiences with them. It's not a cheap "I'll buy it just to try it" setup at 40 bucks a pop.

Your response pretty much hits "it" on the head. When it is cold outside and the blood ain't flowin' the way it should, I will take whatever advantage I can get in the game of ice fishing.

Don't know why ya gotta be a negative newton, but I for one am glad to hear the report - thanks. I picked one up, but have yet to use it (beyond my nightly 'tests' in the basement! Freaks the dog out when it pops!). The video on the site cracks me up - that poor kid is falling all over himself trying to jump after every pole "going off". I wouldn't mind landing a school of Kokes like those!

I gather in Idaho you can have a number of poles on ice. We Utards can have two - with a second pole permit. And I'll second the notion - that farther away pole gets "jacked" while a hand-held jigger gets the direct love. That's my plan. It's easy enough to miss a bite when you're right there - least of all 10 feet away.

I see it as a downrigger for ice - and I use a downrigger on the boat - no harm, no foul! But no - I don't have a gas-auger! And I pull my own sled, thank you!

Another one I like is the [url "http://mrjigger.com/"]Mr Jigger[/url] - allows the rod to rock and roll - a bit of wind, or a tap on the butt, and you're in business.

I have to agree. The best part of ice fishing IS the hook set and takes the most skill. I have to laugh at how lazy and/or unskilled fishermen are getting.

Not even worthy of the name fishermen IMO. More like trappers.

Don't even begin to compare this to a power auger which gets you through the ice to allow one to fish. If an auger is cheating, then I guess so are fishing poles and modern lures.

But whatever floats your boat. Anyone who uses one of these either is in it for the meat, to help with kids (which is fine), is too lazy to really fish or is really missing out on the best part of ice fishing. And there is no way that putting out one of these is any more effective then having a pole in your hand.

Oh yeah, well I just tied line to a stick and dropped the line down the hole with the stick suspended over it. When the fish bit, I grabbed the stick and pulled. I didn't even use a pole.

Sorry, I'm really just mocking all the one-upmanship that's going on here. Fishing is about having fun, regardless of your set up. As long as what you are doing is not illegal or causing unnecessary harm to this fish, then what's the problem? Just get out and have fun. Whether you enjoy the ingenuity that went into a device/invention, or enjoy the man vs. fish feel, just make sure you're enjoying yourself. After all, what's the difference between the first person who decided to put a hook on a line and tie it to a pole to gain that extra advantage, and the person who decided to create a device to help you set the hook so that you can gain a little more advantage?

All this negativity is totally against the reason why we all fish. It's about the enjoyment we get out of it. Quit raggin on someone else because they enjoy fishing a little differently than you. It's not about you being a better fisherman than someone else. If it is, you're missing the point.

I'll bet this contraption doesn't get the hook set on a big ol' bass when ones a biting...why you ask?...because a bass bites under the ice is just same as a bass's bite is...why limit yourself to fish that grab and go when they get the hook set just fine on their own.

Well put StickRig - and your name matches your tackle tactics! Some ice-rods don't even have a reel. As a kid we used to literally use a stick with line tied to the end. Green willow worked quite well actually.

Jacksonman - I don't think you were exactly "agree"ing with me, but no worries. I did refer to a 'second pole'.
Of note: these auto-hook-setters claim to improve on fish mortality rates, as they discourage the fish from swallowing a hook deep. (google "automatic fisherman" for another 'brand).

One of the things I do enjoy about fishing is the variety of tackle options, and various gadgets one can try. I've been enjoying the creative aspect of making tackle or other accouterments. Just look at the wacky addons someone like Tubedude puts on his rigs. The master of PVC.

So who's gonna tell me a Vex, Ffinder, or Underwater camera aren't cheating - at least a bit?

This is an invitation to everyone to discuss the ethics or whatever you want to call it in a civil manner without all the labeling finger pointing and namecalling.

I personally have fun with all my ice fishing toys. My kids love them and it keeps them interested. Now if we were keeping all the fish that would be a different story. All the fish caught on our jawjackers were caught in the jaw. The same can not be said for those poles left deadsticking. Do I prefer jigging? Yes. I will use the jawjacker as a fun toy or to search a little further away from my jogging rod.

HEY! I resemble that remark[laugh] And actually OLD English fished wet flies and nymphs, dry flies came later and could have been an American thing, not sure...sorry I had to disagree with something![]

I can see this gizmo having benifits. I read all the time where some fishers like to cast out, put the rod in a holder and visit...I never saw anything wrong with that.
Plus, have multi rods, this could come in handy. If you are out for the sport and C&R this might not make sense, but if you are trying to se how many you can catch or feed a family then it is a winner. Just my take.
