Hit up the jordan today started off throwing jigs and got a few hits but couldn't set the hook into anything then I tried the bobber and a wax worm rig and caught a few dink whitebass but couldn't manage to catch anything else so I walk around to the other side where some fish were surfacing and put a chartreuse spiral tail on just a hook after that it was game on fish every cast! I caught crappie whitebass bluegills and mud cats. Mostly crappie though. Nothing to big but nice to be able to catch a fish almost every cast! Also along the banks there was quite a few dead bucketmouths kinda weird...

Nice work on the Jordan Riverr. What part were you fishing?

Wow fun day, thanks for the pix!

Wonder what killed the bass? I think bass only spawn in the spring, right, so it couldn't be some sort of post-spawn mortality thing, like salmon. Maybe a fish kill from contamination? Were there any other dead species, or just the bass?

Glad you had so much fun fishing, thanks again for sharing the fun![Smile]

Wow, nice! I don't even know where to start looking in the JR, but I think I need to learn.

Those were pretty nice bluegills, really..

Pretty cool stuff! I love the Jordan River. Those colors you chose are deadly on the whities in there. I never go to that part of the jordan but maybe some day I should. Save those tiny White bass as channel catfish bait, they LOVE them!

Glad to see the river picking back up again. It has been rather slow the past few weeks.

cool story.

off topic quesion here and i replied to one of the twins simply becaus i dont know..... do white bass tatse good? are they like crappie meat wise or are they like stripers where the meat is not as flaky. again i have no clue when it comes to this

Ya now that they closed the gates u can find a good pool that's not frozen and there's probably fish.
[signature]
Its a largemouth there was alit of them dead on the shore and also other species. I don't know why maybe coons and the shallow water or something
[signature]
there pretty much close to crappie i little bit more on the mushy side when raw and filleting them, just cut the lateral blood vein out and they can be pretty good. ive seen the oriental guys out there only keeping white bass and throwing back perch and crappie, kinda strange but they not bad to eat at all.

could be the coons since the gates are closed now and the flow is down alot, and all the fish get bunched up in holes.

are they any good smoked?
[signature]
um ive never smoked em before but i imagine they would be good. ive smoked bluegill before and made lika a hawaiian fish jerky and its great.

[quote kochanut]are they any good smoked?[/quote]

The white bass taste great. I like to use bread crumbs that are seasoned (lemon pepper, louisanna style, cajun). Panko aint bad either. As for smoking them, I couldn't keep it lit[Wink].

Nah, I heard they do not have enough fat to make a good batch. I have yet to try, but I will muster up the courage on the next white bass adventure. Hopefully the ice up will provide me some opportunities soon.

[cool][#0000ff]White bass are a great fish for folks who like to eat their catch. Fun to catch, lots of them, they hit all kinds of flies and lures and they are great to eat.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The larger average sized fish in this year's batch are easy to fillet and a few of them make a nice sized meal for several people. The fillets are small but firm...and very mild. They can be cooked just about any way you like to cook fish.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Any fish can be smoked. But the best candidates are larger fish with coarse or oily flesh...which takes up the flavors of the brine and smoke. White bass are so small that smoking does not take long to turn them into jerky. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If you wonder about the edibility of whities you can ask Joni. She has had a couple of handouts of cold leftovers of Panko fried white bass that I brought to our fishing meetups.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I just had a batch of scampi whities last night. Garlic butter saute...served with pasta or veggies...and some fresh bread to wipe up the leftover garlic butter. No survivors.[/#0000ff]

Mmmmmm even cold they were great TD, but I think the Chef had a lot to do with that.

[cool][#0000ff]Thanks. I'd like to think I turn out good stuff, but white bass are hard to mess up. Although I have knowed a few tanglers that could mess up anything. The opposite of the midas touch...the dumb bass touch.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Anyway, your kindly comments have helped insure that you are still on the "hand me down" list. Next you gotta try some of my "pig out" chowder...either white bass or perch. I am always "nominated" to whup up a big pot of that stuff for our Christmas eve family get togethers. Really good for internal warmup out on the ice. If you REALLY wanna go ice fishing this year that might be an option. [/#0000ff]

Right on, maybe a thermos of hot chowder on the Ice...still thinking I am gonna give it a try.
