I have been sitting on my butt staring at the TV and getting fatter for so long now that I've considered moving the refrigerator next to my chair. Having come up with lame excuses over the past couple of beautiful days to not get up and go fish, I decided to make up for it by going today in the rain.

I've not been doing well at the nuke this summer/fall, so I hit the Hiwassee this morning. I didn't have to run far, so I just putted out slowly to keep the rain off of my face. I was using the H-bird sidescan to see what was going on along the channel edges. Suprisingly, I never marked a fish that I recognized on the side scan, and only two or three on the down scan all day. I fished three different places that I knew or that looked very interesting, and only came up with one bite which turned out to be a TARP-sized blue cat that would have weighed around 25 pounds or so.

The weather wasn't as miserable as I thought is might be, but for some reason I had a slow leak over three hours of constant rain and realized when I took off the rain jacket that my entire chest and belly (considerable square footage) was soaked. Probably through the zipper. Might be time to think about a new, high-dollar rain suit (with suspenders, since my waist is now about even with my butt crack).

I ran across a very interesting structure in the river, so I went back over it and took a screen shot. Judging from what I know from my grandfather's old, old farm, I think I'm looking at an old stone fence, where the farmer used all of the rocks picked up in clearing a field and piled them into a row around the edge of the field to keep the cattle in the pasture. The structure is a good 4 or 5 feet high (accounting for some scouring by the river) and was several hundred yards long. You can see the height of the wall on the left side of the screen where I passed over it. On the right side, which is the side scan screen, the wall comes to a very squared-off corner and turns right and runs back up towards the bank, which is to my right in this screen shot. There was another corner well behind me where I first found this structure (not shown). Really interesting! I might be wrong, but my theory seems to make sense (at least to me).

Here's the fish and the screen shot:
