I went to Horsethief on Friday evening. We arrived about 4:30, slowly set up some rods, and had 6 rainbows on the ice before dark. Then we set up our shelters, beds, and fixed dinner. The 6 trout we caught tasted most excellent cooked in tinfoil over charcoal. So did the Johnsonville cheddar brauts. While we were in the process of setting up the shelters, beds, and fixing dinner, the wolves started howling. They howled for about 3 hours or so. Around 5:00 AM my friend in the next shelter over yelled my name and said, "They are here"! I climbed out of bed, pistol in hand, as quickly as I could expecting to burst out of my shelter face to face with a wolf. When I got outside the shelter, the moon was bright, it was absolutely a beautiful morning, but no sign of a wolf. I did a number 1 and went back to bed. While climbing into bed I accidentally popped the lid off of a hot water bottle that was helping to keep me warm. Now, soaked in my hip region, I got back out of bed and started the day. It took me several hous next to the heater to get dry, but by about 8:00 I was dry enough to be comfortable. We took down our shelters, while C/Ring several more rainbows, and then headed to McCall to meet a friend who had called and told us the bite was on. We arrived in McCall and started fishing around 11. I iced 3 14-16 rainbows in about 5 minutes, and then the bite shut down. We had missed most of it, but we still managed a few fish.
Here are the pictures from the trip. Sorry, I didn't take the time to take any pictures at Horsthief, even though I had intended too. Still it was a fun trip and my first night on the ice. I'm going to need a better sleeping bag.
