Hit Strawberry today with a couple friends and our sons. Tried a couple areas with mixed results. There were a couple places we hoped to fish and after checking them out, we decided against it. Pressure ridges and the like.....
The ice is clear and solid in a lot of places, and others need another week. We didn't go onto anything less than 5". It was probably the noisiest day I have ever had on the ice. Lots of groaning and popping....
We did catch a few Rainbows, and most were coming in suspended about 11-12' below the ice. We were fishing 21 ft of water, so they were in the middle of the column for us.... The cuts seemed to be found on the bottom. When the fish came though, most the time they seemed willing to hit what was presented.
The road is passable w/o 4WD to the Soldier Creek boat ramp, and the Aspen Grove ramp as well. Not many December 23rds that you can say that. Didn't try the Meadows. I don't know what road conditions are like over there. (I would be interested to know, though, if anyone has been over there).
The attached photo is a cut that was picked up by one of the boys in @10 ft of water. He was watching his jig through the ice when he saw this brute swim over and hit it.
(He always seems to out do me when he is on our trips).
Thats what it is all about! Getting out with the kids and seeing the excitement on their faces as they bring 'em up through the ice!
