Took my 4yr old out to Mackay today. I meant to leave by around 6 but slept through the alarm. Left the house about 9:30. The ice is a good 12-15 inches thick. The bank is a bit tricky because the water went down after the lake was frozen. This left the edges sticking up in the air and there is about 4 or 5 feet to the lip of thin ice. Using a log we were able to get on to the thicker ice. We were fishing by noon. Nailed the kokanee in 20-25 feet of water. They were just off the bottom.
I was so proud of my son. He hooked and reeled in his own limit worth of fish. With kokanee I like to put a little bit heavier jig on the bottom, but then put one of those red gamakatsu hooks (size 4) just about a foot above that. I tip both with half a meal worm. Most of the fish I catch come on the bare hook.
If you head out there I would invest in some cleats because the ice was slippery! It was clear so that was fun to watch the fish swim all around under the ice, but if you're not careful you could break your arm!
We left by 3. I didn't even have to set up the shelter with how warm it was today, and we could have probably limited out quickly, but I was enjoying watching my son hook em.
Also, the fish seem just a bit bigger than they were last year. We didn't catch any trout, but I think we could have if I had taken the time to put a pole closer to the bank, or maybe if we got there earlier. All in all it was a great day! If you head out and want to go anywhere but where the little village is, you might want to take a plank.
