I got a fly rod a few days ago, and I was just wondering what kind of flies you recommend for trout and bluegill? Trout flies I'm guessing are pretty universal, but I'm looking for bluegill flies, preferably top water, that appeal to sunfish of all sizes, but tiny bluegill in a small pond can still take.
Thanks a ton!

Small poppers and foam spiders and foam beatles work great for bluegill. Little ant patterns too. I learned to fly fish catching bluegill. They are a pretty forgiving fish. Hope that helps. Trout will take a variety of things too. A parachute adams is a great dry fly if you dont know whats hatching. A bead head hares ear is my favorite nymph, I usually fish them small (size 18-20). Also, the wooly bugger. It will catch all sorts of fish in all varieties of water. Good luck and have fun.

Two great replies already!
Any small fly will work. Many of the same ones you can also use for trout or other fish. The panfish seem to like some of the brighter colors like yellow, orange, red, and chartreuse. So little poppers or simple foam flies of any kind will draw a strike if the fish are close to the surface.
If they are down a bit, try the hare's ear as has been suggested, or any small nymph or mini-streamer.

If I could only take one fly for both it would be an elk hair caddis

I would try Stimulators, small Turk's Tarantulas, small buggers or mohair leeches, and bead head Hare's Ears because they are effective for both species.

Got to have a Royal Wullf or Royal Coachman in your box. The Wulff is far more durable than the coachman tho. Don't forget stimulaters either.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful input!
I've got a Cabelas giftcard if anyone wants to recommend specific brands or assortments.

everything everyone said is what id reccomend. I might have missed someone saying it but i would not be fishing for panfish without a grasshopper pattern of some sort.
your next question about buying flies. I would save that card for other purchases. i am guessing by your name on here that you are younger. you cannot beat the prices of flies on theflystop.com (if your not tying your own) they have been very good quality flies for me.

Out of curiosity, anybody ever used a corn colored glow bug under the ice?
