Me and Ol Wade had some big plans to catch monster stripers up at Watts Sunday. Neither one of us got any sleep so when we arrived at 6 AM...yes 6, it was drizzling a little rain so we took a nap for about 30 mins on the ramp. Literally. LOL
It was still very dark, so we were just watching the sonar and spotted a TON of bait in the cove, thought we saw some striper, but could not get a bite on a spoon. Decided to head to some kitty waters to drown some bait first.
We tried a spot we had fished last year and caught two fish so we felt good about it. It is a point that has a steep drop into the main channel. 45 mins later and two small fish later we bugged out to try a bluff.
We marked a couple good returns on the sonar and set up. Under five minutes a fish in the boat. In less than 15 mins, two fish and one more pulled off. I had two more fish that felt big hit and one pulled off, the other CUT a 50lb leader. I assume it was on some rocks, its just not possible, and the leader was fresh line. We were still getting bites when the rain set in, and we were not prepared for it. Ran the 4 miles to the ramp in driving rain right in our faces. We loaded up and headed South, when all of a sudden it cleared up and looked really nice out! Decided to hit the tailwaters to test it out. Bad idea, way too much current and drifting was out of the question. Wade did catch a monster skippy and we just had to cut that sucker up.
Headed down river to a spot I had marked last Summer. It's just a hump with a hole behind it in the middle of the river. We had a bait stripped off right away then wuite untill I had told Wade we were calling it in 10 minutes, five later, a rod ran and I felt it was a pretty good fish. It took a while in the heavy current but the 58 lb blue came in to get a picture made. It was SHORT and FAT.
We got to see a couple bald eagles and a big 6 point tending a doe on the bank. You gotta love fishing in TN.
