well i thought i would try something different since strike is off and crow and rabbit hunting are terrible so far this year. tried sugarloaf first since thats where everyone said to go. my buddy caught 3 perch and a 13 inch rainbow. 2 of the perch were monsters. one was so fat. as fat as it could get with eggs. we c and r them. i got blanked. then we went and tried just north of crown point by the dam and a 13 rainbow got off right at the hole. none for me again. also overheard a local talking that eveyrone was doing poor saturday..ice was about 12 inches. saw a car on the ice and thought no way. the ice was talking and cracking a bunch under us. we know its safe but stiil a little scary. hard to believe theres barely snow up there except for the shade. come on get warm so i can bass fish again.

Thanks for the update. Can't wait for the perch fishing to turn on so I can stuff myself on eggs. Them eggs are better than the fillets! Tight Lines

How do you prepare your eggs and have you stored them or frozen them or do you need to eat the fresh?

Thanks for the report.

I would love to have a chance at even one of those Jumbos.

Hi panfish,

I have had perch eggs and I agree, I think they are better than the fish and the fish is great.
When I clean them I take the sceines of eggs and break the membrane so I can get the eggs free. I put them all in a bowl. The mixing them with some egg and crackers or whatever you like to make some patties like you would salmon patties etc.
Then I fry them in butter until they are golden brown and then enjoy every egg.
I tried this with bluegill one time and they were about the worst thing I have ever eaten. You would think panfish eggs would all be alike but they are definitely not.

I have never tried freezing the eggs and always eat them the first night. Sometimes I can't wait and eat them raw out on the ice (not advised but they are good). I split the eggs sac and flatten out some, egg and cracker coating and fry. Don't overcook or they will get rubbery. Enjoy

I've also tried cooking other panfish eggs and unless you like "fishy" it's not recommended. But raw with a little wasabi and soy sauce and they all taste good.

Interesting. I've never heard of eating the eggs but fish for perch primarily as a food source and am going to give them a try. Some of the perch we catch at Cascade are shaped like footballs when they are full of eggs. Thanks for the recipe, brdschsr, it sounds delicious. Rod, how do you prepare them? Do they have a fishy/salty taste like caviar?

Perch Eggs - haven't tried 'em yet, but heard other tales of egg-eaters. Some talked about just battering and frying them up as if they were a nice boneless fillet.
Recall mention of the texture being somewhat "interesting" - as they'll sort of pop in your mouth.

Anyone use perch eggs for bait? I tried curing some row and tying up some egg-sacks. I know I got hits on 'em, cuz the one sack I tried was pretty well squished out when I checked and re-baited. Had a few nudges, and missed the strikes.
Tell ya - those sacks sure put out a cloud of scenty trail when I dropped it down the hole.

perchalong

i thought they were biting fine

Nicely done! Care to share any info? Enjoy them eggs - Rod
I've never tried perch eggs, but when I was in Alaska the shrimp had eggs on their legs. After cooking the shrimp in bacon grease we'd suck the eggs off their legs before opening them up to eat the shrimp. Shrimp eggs were delicious and I loved the way they kind of popped as they broke open. Shrimp eggs look very similar to perch eggs, so now I can't wait to try them.

Sounds yummy.[Smile]

I am amazed every time I see some of the perch from Cascade. ---- Wow!

Perch that size are very tempting , but that sure is a long drive with gass being so high . Maybe when I get retired . Curt G.

Perchalong, why do you torment us so? I fished my butt off on Tuesday afternoon which resulted in a big skunkereeno. I was hoping to try some eggs but don't think I was fishing deep enough. Some guys saw a small bear walk across the bay off the Sugarloaf boat ramp about 30 minutes before I got there. It's good to see you keeping everybody humble and I will let you know the next time I'm coming up.

I'm probably going to head up to Cascade on Thursday and have never fished there. I realize my chances of doing well are slim it being my first time fishing there, but I would be happy just catching a couple decent perch. Any suggestions for general location and depth? I have a full arsenal of perch jigs/lures and usually tip them with maggots but I would appreciate any help at all. Thanks!

Went today to try my hand at ice fishing on Cascade for the first time. Started the morning by the dam and caught 3 nice trout, two of them ate a powerbait/worm combo and the biggest of the 3 took a vertical jigged copper kastmaster spoon. By noonish the bite had all but died so I headed to the North end of the lake and found one dink rainbow and a nine inch perch. Overall fishing was slow but not too bad for my first time on the ice...........
