Since it's been feeling like April up here in Northern Idaho, a couple of buddies and I decided we would try our luck on the St. Joe yesterday.
The river is mostly clear except for a few ice jams, although most places have big ice shelves on the shores - which made for interesting access to the river in most spots.
I didn't quite catch my first skunk of the year, but I can't say the same for my buddies. I caught one 9 inch cutty and the other two guys caught nada.
To be fair I should probably mention that a large portion of the good-for-fishing part of the day was spent trying to get our car out of a snowy ditch after it spun out of control. After trying in futility to push it out, we had to hike to Avery where we found a nice guy with a pickup who pulled us out. That was during the warmest part of the day, so we may have missed our fishing window...
We managed to get in about a half hour of fishing after we were freed until it got dark but with no fish to show for it. We decided to cut our losses and we went and drowned our sorrows in some HUGE cheeseburgers in St. Maries.

You win this time Joe. But it's on next time....

I've seen a few things about fishing the St. Joe from time to time. It sure looks like a good place to spend some quality time. It's on my list!

I hope your next trip is more productive, but any trip is better than staying at home and nursing a good case of cabin fever.
