Anyone know where, store or website I could buy maggots? I've never tried them before and would like to give them a whirl when i'm out perch and bluegill fishing.

I used to use Grubco - website/mail order - a
lot back east, and I assume they will deliver here as well.

Maggots, spikes, fly larva... whatever you call them, they are a very good bait; much tougher than waxies, keep all winter in the fridge, and you can load 'em up on a jig hook.
There are other places as well (although I haven't used them). You may see "Euro larva" as well in your search... these are maggots too, only feed something to turn their skin pink.

I use some artificial maggots I think berkly makes them and I have tipped my jigs with them and caught Bluegill Bass Trout Kokanee salmon using them. Bought them from Anglers Den

Thanks! I'll hit the Den and the site. I have wanted to try maggots on the account they're smaller for perch and gills. Wax worms just are too big most of the time, and even if I retry to cut them in half, they turn to mush and fall off the hook. When I have got a bite, it's just because the fish nibbled the end of the worm off!

They have maggots at the Walmart in Brigham City. I usually pick some up before going to Mantua.
Best place to get that type of stuff is at a pet store they have it all and you can buy them in bulk depending on how much you fish I think I might even try some crickets.

When you say maggots, do you mean wax worms or meal worms there pretty similar.
If so there a guy on the for sale section of BFT who son is selling them for a good price you may want to PM him.
Also you can find them at Sportmans & Cabelas. If you looking to buy online line Ive purchased a few hundred wax worms on eBay.

The State Capitol Building is full of them when the legislature is in session. They usually start to hatch in about 2 weeks. You might think they're free as your taxes have paid for them already. However the lobbyist swarming will argue otherwise.

I have mine shipped to me from Minnesota, the maggots are super cheap but the shipping gets a little pricey. I just got my shipment of 2000 in, if you are close by Evanston I could manage to part with some of them. They are the big fat ones and have done me well. I order them every year. PM me if you might be interested, if anything I can get you to the site that sells them. The more you buy the cheaper they are. Hope that helps.

Wax worms are bee moth larvae and are larger, about 1" and fairly wimpy, soft skinned larvae. Meal worms are beetle larvae and have a harder shell and may be 1" to nearly 2". Maggots on the other hand are fly larvae like those on yucko dead carcasses. They are only about 1/2" and are sold as "spikes" or "Euro larvae" so squeemish wives and kids won't worry about what's in the fridge. They come in natural cream color and pink, red and blue. My favorite bait when I can get them. Otherwise I use the Power Maggots as mentioned in another reply.

As someone stated earlier, Sportsman's in Midvale (on 7800... or is it 7200?) has maggots. I was looking for Wax Worms and went to Wal-Mart and Sports Authority trying to find them, but had no luck. Got to Sportsman's and, of course, they were out too -- but they had these little pink maggots. I figured, what the hell, they are the same, right?
They are tougher, but they are not my cup of tea. They didn't work for UL ice fishing, where as my buddy who had WW's was killing it. My 4 year old girl LOVED the pink maggs though, so that awesome. I believe it was $2.69 or something, which I thought was a rip, but oh well.

Not sure if you got that spelled right. Isn't is "Snot Mouth"? I've seen THOSE out ice fishing! Oh wait - that's snotty nosed.... sorry, my bad.
[center]Ah the capital crowd - that's a good one!
[center]Is it an election year again?
Smith and Eddies had a great deal on some, but their supplier hasn't shipped - cold weather keeps them from sending 'em out. Custom Sports in Hyde Park had spikes last year - colored - pink and green too. Haven't checked this year.
Walmart South in Cache Valley has had mealies, but not waxies. Walmart North last year was stocked to the gills.
Pop the lid and make sure they aren't black, or dehydrated to skinnyness! And be careful of shipping in the dead cold of winter.
I've found Petsmart well stocked, but a bit pricier than other sources. Just learned "Don't steal the Ghecko food!"
There's places you can get "dye" to color them yourself too. Don't have a link, but found 'em last year. Think was the shipping killed the deal - coming from the mid-west. Maybe if you're really buying in bulk and sharing around.
Fridge temp is actually TOO cold for them, and something a bit warmer can be just right. But waxies and maggots do freeze easy. I had a hard time with spikes, cuz they're SO small, and tougher skin that waxworms - so harder to get on a hook.
Just stop at a roadkill during late summer, scoop up a big bunch and.... never mind... I think I'll stop.....
From the Grubco website.. "Waxworms are the larvae of the moth Galleria Mellonella. They are called bee moth or wax moth in some areas."
Lots of colloquial differences out there. I dug some larvae out from under the bark of some pine logs while splitting firewood this fall and used them with great success. I couldn't tell them from waxies even up close, and I have the entymology merit badge.....

The trick with spikes (maggots, fly larva, whatever) is to use a light wire hook and pierce them through the "jaw." OK, they don't truly have a jaw but look for the blunt end (not the tapered end)... they'll have two small eyes on top, and a hard, slight protrusion on the bottom of the face. You want to hook them right behind this jaw protrusion.
Slip 4 or 5 on the hook of a light wire jig and the action is fantastic... they'll actually pivot on their jaws and will flare (like a tube jig) when you jig & drop with them.
If a fish nips 1 or 2 off you just slip a few more on there.

I mostly just run the hook through the middle of them and let them wiggle on both sides of the hook. I stuff as many on as will fit. They usually stay on the hook this way and you can catch a lot of fish on the same ones, it's not too often that I have to replace them. If anything you can just slide them forward til the cover the hook if you have a bunch of them on. The ones I order in usually keep until around the end of ice fishing season, and yes keeping them cool is the key. Do not let them freeze. As I said before I order in 2000 at a time and with the shipping I don't think the price is too bad. The outfit I order from claims that you can get 5 different colors or a "party" mix of the colors. I typically stick with white ones. They are nasty little critters but they get the job done.

Chevron in Huntsville sells spikes/maggots as well as all your other wormy needs.

Thanks guys for your all your info and insight on where to buy maggots and usage techniques. I'll have to check a few locations around me and see if I can get some for this weekend. Have checked a few walmarts and the sportmans here in riverdale, no luck yet, just crawlers, mealies, and wax worms :/.

I went to sportsman in midvale around Christmas and the fishing guy said they do not and will never carry spikes/maggots. Have you found them there? Are they not in the bait fridge and freezer? I've only found them consistently in stores around cache valley. I can find waxies anywhere but having bad luck with spikes in slc.
