I was wondering if anyone has had experience with GL Loomis and their rod warranty service. Long story long, I broke the tip section on my GL2 at Henry's last summer. finally got around to sending it in to get it fixed. I got a call back from Loomis informing me that my rod tip broke due to my bad and it would be X amount to fix it. X amount in fact was about 90% of a new rod. I kinda felt like since my rod was older and discontinued (They would have to replace it with a new model) I got the run around. One of the reasons I buy quality higher end equipment is in fact for the warranty. I broke a tip on a Sage rod last year and they fixed it for a handling fee of $50.00 bucks, which I thought was reasonable. The Rep from Loomis wasn't much help on the phone, had little or no idea what was going on with my rod other than the Bill.
I guess they'll just mail it back to me. (they'll probley bill me for the shipping) I'm really bumbed, I've been a Loomis fan for years. I've had several of their rods and loved my 8wt.[:/]

That is odd that you received that response. I have a friend who busted their 8wt loomis rod, sent it in and they upgraded them to the new model rod with no extra charge. I hope you can get it sorted out, it would be lame to have paid that much for a rod twice.

I Broke my GL2 a few years ago, called customer service, for $50.00 and no questions asked they sent me a new rod Fed Ex, had to give them a credit card to hold on file, once i received the new rod, I had 30 days to send my old one back or they would charge my card. They even paid for the return shipping. From what I have been told Shimano recently bought them out and since then the warranty is not what it used to be.

Thanks Chris, That's what I thought should of happened. I sent them a long email a couple of days ago trying to sort it all out but still waiting for a reply back. I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed.[Wink]

The warranty is for manufacture defects ONLY. It does not cover any other breakage, and it is up to G Loomis to determine if the reason for breakage was a manufacture defect. The $50 expedite service that was mentioned above has since been changed to a $100 fee, but works the same as mentioned above. There are very few rod manufacturers that are going to warranty a rod for any other reason than manufacture defect. There are some, but they are not G Loomis or Lamiglas. I don't think you will be able to change their mind, but there is always a chance. A coworker went through the same thing with his GL2 last year, and I had the same issue with a certified Pro Lamiglas rod last year as well.

Good luck, and if it doesn't work out save yourself a few bucks and get a Temple Fork Outfitters rod, they have an unconditional $25 lifetime warranty on all their rods.

I've had the same experience as you with Sage (broke mine twice, excellent service both times). Never had to deal with anyone else, yet. I'll keep it in mind next time I buy a high end rod, though. From what I've heard, Loomis was just bought out by someone else and they dropped the warranty. That might be why you are not getting what you think you should.

I believe Loomis was bought by Shimano a few years back and the warranty has been an ever changing issue since then. My understanding is you can do the $100.00 deal without sending the rod back until you receive the new one. That could have changed again which is very upsetting as I only use Loomis rods and have more than 40 of them.

The upper end companies are changing their warranty but in all fairness, they did get abused. I had guys deliberately break their rod to get a new upgrade.

Sad thing is, the high $ on these rods should be - because of the warranty. Seriously, no graphite rod should cost over $300. The high dollar is to cover the no fault.
But that no fault is fading. Even Orvis went from lifetime to 25 years (which is lifetime for some...LOL)
I have Sage and Winston and Hardy. "NON" of them are a shipping price repair. Never have been. You pay shipping and you pay repair. I broke the tip on my LT and it was shipping plus $75., ame with my Hardy. Sage was $125.
After working at Four Seasons where Loomis was sold and I understood it as FACTORY defect only.

Really too bad you didn't know this before going in and hope all works out. The Asian line still covers no fault.

Thats why I quit fishing loomis and pretty much sold my whole quiver except for my 1082C. Warranty isn't what it used to be...... Who's going to pay $100.00 to replace a gl2? Do yourself a favor and have someone put together a custom rainshadow for you, excellent warranty for a rod that'll blow loomis out of the water.......

Thanks for all the input. I think I'm cooked. Just need to let off some steam and inform folks of whats going on, so they can make a informed purchase (BUY SOMETHING ELSE!) As I told the Loomis folks, I understand the current warranty as it stands on their website. I do have a problem with the fact that it was alittle different at the time I got my rod. I would not buy a Loomis rod today. I've been building rods for years and i guess I'll fix my GL2 myself and move on. I have been looking at TFO rods and blanks, I might just pick up a Cabella's rod. I'm going to Alaska in the near future and I'm going to take several rods in the 8wt-9wt range along with my spey rod. I think I'm over and out with GL Loomis. I wished Mr. Garry Loomis still owned the company!

Shimano bought loomis in 97, when Gary had cancer he wanted the best reel company to own the best rod company ([url "http://www.tackletour.com/reviewinterviewgaryloomis.html%29"]http://www.tackletour.com/...viewgaryloomis.html[/url]. The GL2 might not be under the lifetime warranty program. Some companys leave out the lower end models or only do them for a year. I know thats how shimano is for their warranty. I've slammed rods in the car door and they warrantied them even though it was obvious I broke it. It was also an expensive rod and I still had the receipt and original barcode.

That is exactly why I don’t fish Loomis any more. I had a guide wear out, and they stiffed me. The guide had such bad grooves that it was cutting my line. They actually said that I did not keep my line clean enough! I argued with them, and they finally admitted that the guide was probably not up to specs, but they would not honor the replacement warranty …without the fee. Get this, because ‘the guide was provided to them by a second party.” As a result, that rod is still sitting in the case, in my basement, along with another Loomis rod, which I now refuse to fish. I replaced them with St Croix rods, which are excellent.

Well, after five or six emails just to get a reply. Loomis wins! I'm out. does any one want to buy a GL2 with a little wear n tear? half price sale![Wink] You can send it in and get a new one for only a $178.95

Ed, how much of the tip? Turn it into a bush wacker.

If its an 8 wt, and now around 7 foot or so, I might be interested. I hate G-Loomis, but I have a tarpon trip next month where I could use a very short 8-wt if the price was right.

I'm not sure just how much of the tip is left. I'll have to look at it again when it gets back from Loomis. I might rebuild it myself. Still need a backup. I'll let you know Jim. If you can use it I'll make you one heck of a deal![cool]

Sounds good. I just cut off a perfectly good section of a 4-peice 6wt TFO to make it into a 6 1/2 foot 6-weight. Haven't got to fish it yet, but it casts fine in the back yard. I could do something similar with an 8.

Check out North Fork Composites! It's gary loomis's new company......
