The ones I picked up were just from WalMart. They are the actual spike kind, and they were only like $6. I have tried the chain kind and I liked these better. They came in sizes ranges instead of individual sizes, like 5-8, 9-12, etc. I am not sure about kids ones.

I've been thru lots of pairs of the spring cleats that simply stretch via a rubber wrap on your boot. They are inexpensive, but break, come off, and will ball up snow under your boot.
For Christmas my wife I got me some called "Stabil-icers" They are a hard rubber sole with hex screw head type cleats and have a velcro strap system that goes over your boot. They are excellent! But the bad news they are pricey - $50 at REI. REI is the only place I know carries them.
They are also not universal and come in size ranges. I have an 11.5 size shoe and the 10-12 were not big enough to go over my ice fishing pacs - but exchanged up to XL and they fit (and grip) great.
My skull, back, wrists and elbows are worth $50 so I love them. A friend who uses them for winter trail hiking in snow and icy conditions says they've lasted him a long time under tough use.
So, I can recommend them - if you can afford them.
