Hey guys I got a minnow trap recently and was wondering when I could go out and catch some. I realize it's only January, but when do they appear??? Any info will be much appreciated

[cool][#0000ff]Most minnow habitats are frozen over now...with the exception of some small warm springs out in the desert.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]But, if you can drill a hole in the ice large enough to drop your trap through...and are able to get it turned around to bring back up through...you can get minnows through the ice. You need to find them on sonar and then drop down to them. Scofield is a good spot. Ditto for Settlement Canyon outside of Tooele. Chubs are often so thick in those places that it is difficult to fish.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Otherwise, the best time to get them is when they swarm the shallows to spawn in the spring. [/#0000ff]

i have picked a few at the berry before under the ice with my trap. if they still have a dock off the side of the main boat ramp. the shiners hang under it. or used to. lol have not fished the berry threw ice in yrs.

[cool][#0000ff]The redside shiners have virtually disappeared from Strawberry. It only took a couple of years with the new slot regulations and additional cutt plantings and the shiners were history. Still lots of chubs but getting to be very few small ones. Just like Starvation. Lots of big old spawners but the predators eat most of the small ones before they can become big ones. The cutts are doing the job they were hired for.[/#0000ff]
