I bought myself a new 6in Nils ice auger and it showed up yesterday so i had to go give it a try. So dad and i went to condie first. THere were 4 groups out and i saw no fish being caught the whole time we were getting ready and walking to a spot to try. Drilled 8 holes in about 3 minutes WOW! the Nills is awesome. fished in the first spot for 45 min or so with one bite and none of the other groups doing anything. I had one bite was all. Tried paddle bugs, curly tails, ice flies. tried dead sticking, jigging, moving it around the hole and got nothing. So we packed up tried the big bay thats next to the road you drive in on and no even a hit. drilled holes all over the place with no results. (raced a guy and his gas auger and drilled my holes faster with the nils). Fished for 30 min or so with no results.
So we said bag it and took off for Winder. Got there and walked to one of the bays on the far side and started punching holes out from the bank trying to locate fish. About 15 feet off the bank I started getting hits. turned out to be mostly small perch with a few bigger ones thrown in. Caught one dink bluegill. F&G showed up and talked with us. He told us they drained the lake dry a few years ago and the bass and gills had not yet recovered. after he left dad and i both picked up some planter trout that looked like they are starving to death being out competed by the shear numbers of perch in the lake. The holes we were using got hook in mouth so we started moving around trying different places and did well on the dink perch in all.
So a good day for the most part and i am glad i bought the nils it is alot of fun to use. IM not sure ill be going back to winder for a few years though until the lake recovers a bit though

The Nils is great. Just make sure you don't put any downward pressure on it or ding on anything. I babied mine like crazy but somehow mine got bent (I don't know how) and now it doesn't work at all. The replacement blades are dang near impossible to come by as well. I've been stuck using my 8" Mora.

How is the road into condi? Is it all muddy, or snowy? Zdid you notice if the back way was open?

Too bad the catching wasn't better, but it sounds like your Nils auger is a hit.
I am really glad to see some of the pan fish coming back into Winder, but I hope that they stock something bigger in there to eat the little buggers. If it gets so over run with dinks that the bass etc can't grow, it will be a really long long time before it recovers, if ever!

flyfool if you don't have an 8 inch

the road was dry and a little rutted but clear the whole way in as for the back way i did not look.
When F&G came out to check our licences i asked if there were plans to stock some predator fish like tiger musky or some bigger bass he said they were lookign into planting tigers again in a few lakes around so we'll see

Thanks. A couple days ago they were all on backorder. I ended up getting a 6" lazer as my new backup, I know it will be better than a mora. I can still drill fine with the mora, but once you have used a nils nothing else seems to compare. I'll have to get that while they have them in stock. Thanks again.

Sweet that is exactly what I wanted to hear. Hope they put them back in lamont. And put some in condi again to help with the little tiny perch..i kinda hope they dont put them in winder as thre probly wouldny survive that place gets hit hard during irigation season.. hope they throw them in this spring from a few fingerling just big enough to fend for them selfs to a few 20+" ers in. I want a muskie spot in south east idaho.

Judging by how fat the bass were this fall, I think the bass have been enjoying the perchlet infestation at Condie. Tigers would be cool, but I don't know if I want them in Condie. With it being my favorite bass lake, I don't want to worry about my lures getting cut off all the time. I guess a small population would be fun, I just don't want as many as they have in Newton in Utah. I can't tell you how many times I've had plastics cut off there.
I agree on Winder, I don't think there would be enough food for them in there anyway. Lamont sounds like a good place for them. Lots of panfish and small bass. I think that would be pretty cool.

flyfishingfool check out my post about the guy that will sharpen the blades. i just got mine back thursday and fished all weekend. mine was all bent up and dull as a butter knife. now its sharp as all get out. takes about 15 sec to get threw 12 inches of ice. ust like new. and only charged 20 bucks and s&h

I just want a muskie fishery here in southeast idaho. I hope they do make one out of lamont that would be cool..

johnson and lamont have muskie. they dont plant large numbers but they are in there.
[signature]
Yeah, definitely not a ton of them. I have still yet to see any, though I hear that the ones in Lamont are quite large. I wouldn't mind if they put a few more in there.

I agree on not putting TM into Condie. The bass there are big enough to control the baby pan fish. The same goes for the bass and trout of Twin and Glendale.. they're big enough to balance things. But places like Winder and Johnson could probably use a little help in getting a balance going.

They are big because they havnt stocked it since 2005 or so. With muskie that is.

they havnt been able to buy them if i remember right... the hatcheries were having problems. utah has a hatchery that should be producing fish soon
[signature]
Yeah, I think it was 2006, and it was only a few hundred. I imagine a lot of them were harvested or died from improper handling and that's why they are rarely seen. It would be fun to have a place for good tiger action without having to deal with the zoo that is Newton.

Utah's is up and running last i herd. The last couple of stocks into pineview came from there own hatchery I sure would like a good muskie fishery here in south east idaho. And lamont would be perfect for it..

I talked to someone over the phone at the pocatello fish and game office and they told me that there might be 10-20 tigers left in Johnson and Lamont. I went one time but couldn't find them, I did have something good size on for a few seconds but I think it was a bass. I would like to have a Newton type res in the preston area that would be nice!
