FISH:
Hit Strawberry on Saturday (1-14-12). Went to a new location That myself and my buddy have never fished before. We got to the location we picked out and got set up. The fishing started out slow with just 2 fish being picked up. After and hour we started moving looking for the fish. I picked out a few locations to try while my buddy headed the other way to check out some other spots. after 3 hours of looking around we finally found the fish and get set up right over them. Thank goodness for the brand new gas auger as some areas of ice were 18" thick.
Here is a double hook up I got right around the time fix was giving me my quick access to the outhouse which I missed due to hooking fish.
The fishing was good later in the afternoon. with fish almost always on the screen. For a while I was catching them as fast as I could get my jib baited and back in the water. I did manage to get a few strange with. This one had a large growth, looked like something happen due to having its fin clipped.
We did land any slot busters this trip. most fish were between 18-20 inches. Many of the cutts in this area were fat, not the typical snake like creatures you catch.
When we got ready to head home I noticed that the new auger was leaking gas. Got home and made the trip all the way back to Cabelas to trade for another new one. Got it back home and made sure that it worked. Everything check out but I was still debating on whether to head back out on Sunday or not.
BUST:
Most days that I hit the berry I like to get there before light or just as it is getting light. On Sunday I did not decide to go until 7:30 in the morning. I got my stuff all loaded up and left my house about 8. I took the 4wheeler with me on this trip so I could venture out to a new location that I’ve had my eye on for some time. I got to the ladders and unloaded everything. I made sure to put a tie down around everything on the sled hoping that nothing would fall off. I started on my way out to my new spot skating on the super slick ice going at a slow pace. There were a few people at the ladders setting up but I did not see anything being pulled out. I had to make it over a few pressure ridges, some of which had newly open water. I kept looking back to make sure everything stayed on the sled. I made it over the last one and was almost to my spot when I hear this noise. I look back to see my bucket a hundred yards behind me with everything dumped out and spilled all over the ice. I then look down to see my new auger hanging half way off the sled with the carburetor busted off. Damn it, that ended that trip really quick. Got everything picked up and headed back the way I came. I felt like crap, not so much about the auger as I knew I could fix it, but because I could not fish. I did not pack a spare hand auger in the burban just in case.
When I got home I check on line for replacement parts. Turned out to be really cheap to fix, now I just need the parts to get here before the weekend. The lesson here….make sure to secure everything in a safe and protective manner, mount the auger to the gun rack next time, and always carry a spare auger.
