That is my question,

I am headed out on Wed for some mid week fishing (God knows I need it) and I am taking two of my cousins that have never been ice fishing, only problem is I am recieving conflicting reports.

Mantua I hear is decent but not hot and the fish are few and far between

Scofield Iam being told has turned off and isn't worth the drive while others are saying it's hot to trot

Rockport with the tourny I am told is over fished and has been really slow, others are saying on Wed that due to not alot of pressure it will be good.

Basically I am stuck, last year I hit Mantua but it was after the larva hatch and the fish had no interest in anything not larva and rockport was OK a few weeks back but that was prior to all the pressure. I have not been to scofield in ages but would rather not make the trip due to time if the fishing has been turned off.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Fished rock port for the first time last Friday, the 13th, and hid it off. We had to keep moving but were able to find them about 25 ft off the dam and using night crawler on either paddle bugs or white tube jigs. We got there at 9 left at 2 and had 12 fish between 3of us. Fish fought really hard and nearly lost my pole.

You may want to try East Canyon. It hasn't been over fished yet.
Mantua is always iffy for me. I usually wind up moving several times to find the right depth and locate fish.

Lost Creek is also worth adding to your list.

Have you gone out to east canyon? if so how was it? Not caring for size just numbers for the new comers.

Go to Scofield out on the south end and walk to the island. Trust me on that!

As for Rockport it just isn't on this year. I was one of the 1st guys out on the ice and the action sucked back then too compared to previous years. Therefore I don't buy the over fished argument on Rockport.

Twins when was the last time you were out at Scofield I have been leaning that way just trying to get a recent report.

December. I gave this advice to Red Leaker and he freaking slayed the fish this weekend. His report is probably on page 2 or at the bottom of page 1. I will find it in a second. Here was mine....

"Scofield - Went with my twin and BFT's In2Fishing (plus his 2 kids). We started out near the parking lot in 27 feet of water. The fishing was slow (4 fish) so my twin and I trecked out across the lake to the island. The pressure cracks were perfectly safe to walk across. When we arrived at the island there were 7 other fisherman there.

My twin caught 28 fish (23 cutts, 3 rainbows, and 2 big chubs). I caught 9 cutthroats. My twin was using a pumkin pepper gold jig in 1/32oz tipped with a nightcrawler. I used a gold kastmaster and a silver kastmaster with a chunk of chub minnow. I was about to switch to my twins rig but I had 2 fish that were so big that I could not reel them in. Too bad they got off the hook. I guess I was going for a shot of quality over quantity and got no fish below 13 inches. I realize now that I need to switch out the hooks for a longer shanked hook, like the ones that come with blue fox size 3 spinners. Oh well lessons learned."

The Red Leakers report from this weekend........

"First off, let me say thanks to those who provided such good information to my earlier post requesting information on Scofield; it was valuable and much appreciated.

Me and some co-workers had our annual retreat to Scofield where we stay at a house owned by one of them right in town. The retreat usually consists of many frosty beverages followed by an attempt to go fishing in the morning. In years past the fishing has been to say the least poor. This year however, awesome!!!

Myself and one other guy made it to the lake at daybreak and headed towards the island. Set-up about 300 yds to the Southeast of the island and fish on immediately. It was so fast and furious it was almost impossible to fish two poles.

My buddy went old school with a piece of crawler below some split shot on one pole, and the old "power-goo" directly on a kastmaster on the other. For the most part it didn't matter but after a while the "power-goo" seemed to do better.

I set up a jighead tipped with crawler below a flasher on one pole, the other pole was a small spoon tipped with shrimp. In the morning the crawler rig did better but as the day moved on I couldn't even get the shrimp rig 10' in the water before a fish was chasing it on the sonar.

As far as a fish count I have no idea, let's just say a lot. All of the fish were between 10 to 20".

After reading the TDTwins reply to my Scofield info request I almost bumped up line to 6lb but didn't, 4lb worked. However, I should have taken the advice of changing hooks. I had a monster take the shrimp rig. Zippin drag and fightin hard. Bent the treble and got off. Must of only had him with the one hook. Couldn't be too disappointed after all of the other fish we did land but I would have like to see what he was.

The rest of our clan did not want to make the walk to the island and stayed closer to shore. They too caught fish but not nearly as many.

So to rap up.

[ul][li]Get away from people and the shore.[/li][li]A spring bobber is a necessity. Fish barely bump and don't pull-up on the first bump wait for the 2nd or 3rd.[/li][li]All fish we caught were Cuts and a few Bows.[/li][li]Not a chub caught (wanted some for bait but a good sign for the lake)
[/li][li]Had a blast!!!"[/li][/ul]

I'm thinking I am gonna go up to Scofield after all.

Thank You for the info, I'm hoping we land into the mess of em.

Last question, ROADS am I gonna need some chains with this storm system or has it been maintained well?

Here is the NOAA report............
"Wednesday: Snow likely after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Wind chill values as low as -15. West southwest wind between 14 and 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible."

It is well maintained. It really is supposed to come in that night. I wouldn't worry a bit about that road. Less than an inch isn't bad at all.

My sons have been fishing there. fishing is good for Bows in the 12" to 15" size. They are suspended in the deeper water out from the ramp. At least that's where they have been catching them. No report for Taylor Flats though.

I'm kinda partial, as it's close for me. But +1 if you're just interested in lots of catching and not too worried for something big, (or hoping to find perch! waah) pretty well guaranteed good action on the footlong planter bows.

Don't how much travel you're up for - but the distance from Mantua to Hyrum isn't too bad. And the roads should be just fine.
If you want specific tips or pointers, parking maps - shoot me a PM.
