anyone do this? anyone have pics or a set of plans? my buddy did this and said it was awesome. I am not as mechanically qualified as him. and just looking for some set instructions with reviews from someone on here. thanks for any help. sick of having to have razor sharp blades all the time and they're expensive.

awesome! thanks! I have a 6 inch sk mora. should do well when those blades start to dull a bit

The problem with this is the battery. Keep it charged and warm.
I have talked with a few people that have converted their hand auger to work with a hand drill and they were less than happy with the results. The battery just doesn't work well in the cold.

Been doing it for years.
Marginal, is how I would describe the performance.
Batteries are OK if oyu keep them warm. You can also strip out an old battery and wire in wet cell batteries that last much longer, just link 3, 6 volt batteries to make 18 volts.
8" augers are just to much, even with new blades, to much strain on the drill.
6" augers work well, Not to much strain on the drill. Do the math on the area of a circle and see how much less ice is being cut 6" vs 8",big difference.
I now have a gear reduction system that I picked up. It was meant to convert your drill to operate a meat grinder so it has a 6/1 gear reduction. The 18 volt will do a dozen holes in 12" with an 8" auger using the reducer. That's a Ryobi too, not a good drill.
I'll try to get a few pics up.

[#502800]I have a Craftsman 19.2 drill with a lithium Ion battery and it works fine with a 6 inch auger and a quick connector. I normally don't drill over 10 holes and if I did, I would just take out the quick connect and screw the handle on. On second thought, I might just buy another lithium battery.[/#502800]

[#502800]I would not try this with an 8 inch auger.[/#502800]

I have a buddy that did this.....but he uses a miluakee 28v lithium ion...he said he says that its necessary if u wanna drill more than 2 holes to have that kind of battery capacity....if you dont have one they are 300 dollars or so...i think a used gas auger would b about that price. just my 2 cents

i bought an adapter at Bass Pro in Chicago a few years ago and it works pretty good, much better than drilling by hand, I use a Dewalt 18v and take two fresh batteries but never ran the first one down but have only drilled 5-7 holes each time in about 8-11 inches of ice.

Maybe you could get a couple or 3 buddies together to pitch in on a new power auger. A buddy and I went halfs on one a few years ago. Just something to think about.

After reading the post in the link I made my own adapter just like his. I have a rigid 18 volt lithium ion and have used it all season with a 8 inch auger and have had great success and will never go back to doing it by hand or getting a gas auger. The cold don't seem to affect the batteries to much. The other day a hyrum I drilled 18 holes with one battery and I could have done more. I have two batteries and I don't usually drill more then 15 holes. I think its all about having a good drill. Plus I get to use my drill all year just not during the ice season.

I'm just lookin at the long term. seems like a hand drill auger will be low maintainence and won't have to worry about it starting or mechanical problems. I usually don't drill more than 10 holes anyways. and I'd have a sweet new drill to use all the time on other stuff.
