Okay, so I am looking into getting a finder that has GPS on it. My question is where do you get the maps for them. I am looking at a Hummingbird 500 series finder if that helps.

I know that Cabela's had them when I was looking at sonars a month ago.

I just broke down and ordered up a Lowrance m68c - from what I understand it comes with maps. It's not one of the high-end GPS systems. But big step up from what I've had.

Now I need to figure out (1) do I 'need' an ice-transducer and (b) if so - where do I get it? which one works with this model of Lowrance?

wouldn't mind getting one of those portable bags, but they only seem to come with finders IN them already, least from what I've seen. Maybe I'll just fashion something from foam and PVC!

Good purchase Coyote. I had the lower model the x67 and it failed 6 wks ago. Lowerance has a 5 yrs "warranty" where if it fails you can send it back and they will replace it for a fee or you can upgrade. The fee you pay is comparable to buying a new one retail, but you can get just the unit itself without re-buying the transducers etc. So I opted to upgrade to the m68 and love the additional options.

However, as far as the maps go it is extremely basic. I believe the Humminbird (which I was contemplating but I already had the ice ducer and skimmer transducer for the Lowerance) has a slot that you can insert a SD card with detailed maps. I believe that is what DeadI was asking about. If I was starting from scratch I would probably have gone with the Humminbird. But with that being said I'm very happy with the m68 also.

Coyote when I bought my x67 (the x67 and the m68 take the same cables) almost 5 years ago I got it at Cabela's and they sell the "ice ducer" and the portable bag for it separately. I do not remember the model# for the ice ducer but they can look it up for you.
