Relatively new here, but have a question. I have never fished Starvation and was thinking about heading out there tomorrow. Wondering if anybody is willing to post or PM me to send me in the right direction, as far as how deep, location, etc. Mostly looking to catch trout. Thanks in advance.

I have never ice fished there but have had my boat in the water. I troll under the bridge and always seem to do pretty good there for trout. Dont know if that is much help or not but there you go.. good luck

I generally fish the narrow areas by the bridge, and have done pretty well there ice fishing for trout. Last time I ice fished there, there was a family who set up off that point right by the bridge, fairly close to shore (only about 20 ft of water) and got some nice bows and a just gorgeous brown, about 26".

They don't seem to care what they hit, any jig tipped with wax worm or meal worm seemed to go over well.

hey guys im looking for small pearch at starvation any places?

Rabbit Gulch. Can't keep them off. They will be small, though.

[cool][#0000ff]Probably the best place to start, if you are new to Starvation, is the Rabbit Gulch area. See attached maps. As you approach the lake you will see the bridge and the lake to the east. There is a turnoff marked for the Strawberry River. About 1 mile past that there is a left turn lane in the road...with mail boxes on the right and a road turning off to the north (left). Get on the frontage road. It is old Hwy 40 and goes all the way down to "Bunny Gulch". Do not take the turn to the left on the way down or you will get lost back up in the oil field.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There is a pay station...state park. Better if you have a pass. Toilets are primitive. No running water. Parking at the end of the road and easy access onto the ice. Follow the trails and look for previously used areas. Good places to start. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Lots of small perch in water around 15' deep. Bigger perch tend to be deeper. You will catch a few rainbows in the shallower water but will do better if you move out to 30' or deeper and fish at mid depth. Be careful not to go too far out as there are reports of open water and/or thin ice out in the middle.[/#0000ff]

Now, here's a question.. Are there any Rabbits in Rabbit gulch? My friend and I are having a "surf or turf" debate or monday....

Anybody seen cottontails or whitetails while driving in, etc..?
[signature]
[cool][#0000ff]About 4 years ago the heavily rutted and potholed road into the gulch was paved with a nice asphalt surface. That has resulted in lots more traffic...and fewer bunnies. Used to be lots of both cottontails and jacks all the way back in. These days you can still see a few but mostly away from the road and the camping areas.[/#0000ff]

ON my way over there now, I see cottontails sometimes but they have been on the incline for the past few years. I hear its a 10 year cycle.

[cool][#0000ff]In most places that cycle is directly proportional to the number of beered up bozos in the back of pickups that blast the areas at night. Shooting is illegal inside the state park areas but judging by the number of shell casings it ain't nonexistent. Maybe the bunnies are doing drivebys on their homies.[/#0000ff]

We usually camp in the Indian Bay area, and see several rabbits each day. Mostly the little ones though, not the big jacks.

starvation is a state park get caught shooting anything and you have a ticket... cant even duck hunt it.??? but the coke fields to the east have bunnies.

sent ya a pm. chasing eyes tonight??? good luck hope ya spank a few. going up sat night till sunday if you wana come.[Wink]

That's true, and also need to be aware that a lot of area around Starvation is Indian Reservation land. Uintah and Ouray I think, if I remember right.
[signature]
This has been my experience, too. I've been told about the 7 year or 10 year cycle by biologists and the like, and never seen a bunny for 20 years in places we used to hunt them for 5-7 years at a stretch....

Don't even have to be drunk or nocturnal. Cheap 12 ga. ammo from Kmart has turned many a man into a trigger-happy moron, and I've gone back to favorite places to find hundreds of shattered bodies of jacks, cottontails, sparrows, gophers, weasels, badgers, robins, foxes, coyotes, pygmy rabbits, crows, lizards, deer, kangaroo rats, and anything else strewn across the landscape.
[signature]
I don't know what a coke field is....?[unimpressed]

And of course, I was talking about the general area, not the state park.

oil feilds. 5 miles east...[Wink]

Oh you'd know THOSE if you'd seen 'em!

Now why would anyone search for SMALL perch? I thought most folks like to get PAST the small one, and find the chunky monkeys! Or ar ya looking for Walleye bait? Small Fry?

HEy I never got that supposed PM but I am up for some fishing tonight. Only caught one perch yesterday, but like on the other PIKEMAN thread the edges where I was planning on going were a no go without waders. I am down for whatever. PM Sent.
