Went with TyeDye to the Middle Provo river today. Came up to our FAVORITE fishing hole...only to see a guy standing in it fishing, with a few people waiting to get in. Wonder why anglers on that river feel the need to be right in the water next to the fish? That and why they can not use the trails out of the water? We watched a guy just plow his way up stream. Talk to a few of them..they said they did not get anything...go figure. Got a nice fight at one of the most unlikely places...and then lost the fish near the bank. Went to find a new hole and saw TyeDye with a fly rod trying his luck. WOW that was a suprise! Tried all around the river with him and then decided to move to the inlet of Deer Creek. TyeDye got 4 bites and I got 1 fight....talk about SLOW.
Got to a parking lot near the bridge. Spooked some ducks out of the fishing holes and then tried our luck. After 10 casts I felt a big hit...then started fighting a monster brown. Getting all excited I tried my best to keep it out of the current. After showing himself several times he took for the current and got off [frown][:/][frown]. TyeDye was still having no luck so we opted to go for Deer Creek near the dam for the last hour of light.
Slipped in the mud of the steep shore to get down to the beach. Nothing like getting all muddy and not being able to wash off. As I threw out my 1st cast TyeDye yelled to me that he broke his reel. So as his twin I gave him my spare. While he was rigging up I casted right next to him along the shore and got the only fish of the day......an 11 inch Rainbow Trout. The next hour was un-eventful. We got so bored with the lack of action we started throwing rocks at the shallow water next to one another. Got some odd looks from those who were on the trail heading back to their cars. Talk to a guy in the parking lot who was getting ready to start heading out there like he was a part of a NASCAR team. He asked how we did...we told him just the one today...he laughed and said that he gets 30-40 an hour everytime he goes out, some of which go 6lbs (really 1 every 2 min....B.S. IMHO). We asked what he was using and he said......powerbait (more B.S) ...claiming that he can never even get a bite on a spinner. Before I could call the guy a lair he was running out to the beach at full speed.
On the provo river I was using a black/grey boddied, silver bladded Roostertail Spinner in size 1/8. At Deer Creek the lure that got the rainbow was a 1/4oz gold kastmaster. Many other lures, crankbaits and even a popper (just for fun) were used today.
A very nice brown lurks in this part of the river
A Deer Creek Rainbow Trout...or is this a spotted freddy?
