Buddy and I arrived at Causey at 730 this morning and it appeared we had the lake to ourselves. We saw fresh footprints and sled drag marks heading out and back in from the dam. The ice is not solid to the shores, there is a good 3'-5' gap from shore to safe ice. We made the leap of faith from some boulders onto safe ice and dragged the sled after us (yay it floated!). There is a good 5" of slush on top of the ice, and waterproof boots are entirely recommended if not required.
We walked out due east by southeast from the dam and setup near one of the cliff faces. The ice was 15" solid where we drilled and 33 degrees, water depth where we were was 80'. We fished for 3 1/2 hours and saw only 1 fish show up on the flasher to check out my jig at 30' then took off to 60' and disappeared. We started using pink ratfinkies tipped with wax worms. After those didn't produce for us we tried some garlic powerbait to hopefully bring some fish to us. We failed [sly]. After going through our tackle boxes we couldn't get rid of the skunk! The heavy rain turned to very heavy blowing snow and we figured it was time to pack up. We spoke with another group that setup about 100 yards from us and they were encountering the same thing we did. Zero activity on the flasher. After we came back from chatting with them my buddies pole was half in the water and his jig was broke off. Typical!
:CAUTION: Ogden Canyon had black ice on the roadway which a Ogden PD cruiser found out the hard way. We came upon him about 5 minutes after he rolled his cruiser. The Officer was okay (aside from a little hurt pride) and his fellow officers arrived so he didn't need any help from us.
And finally, I am the worst ice fisherman ever! 3 weeks of the true skunk. Bleh.
